I could use some recommendations for trustworthy devices.

I currently am not testing my RO water, it comes from publix, just ordered an RODI unit and didn't want an inline as I won't be mounting the unit, so I thought a handheld would be better.

As for checking salinity I'm just using a swing arm unit.

Tank is 29g with no algae problems currently.

Little bump. Are the HM Digital TDS-4 good?

I would still suggest an in-line meter, such as the HM Digital DM-1 (Dual) or the TRM-1 (Triple). Even if you aren't mounting your RO/DI system the in-line meters still easily mount to the frame of the RO/DI system, and stay hooked up constantly. You can then easily toggle between RO only readings, RO/DI readings, or if you have the triple you can see three different areas to know when filters need to be replaced. It's super simple, and you don't have to worry about any contamination from storage containers, etc., that could skew TDS readings at all.

For the salinity I would still use a refractometer, such as the Bio Tek Marine which is an actual Seawater Refractometer, and not just a Salinity Refract. HTH!

Thanks. I'll look into the inline ones. My unit is on the way so too late to add it now.

Any of the cheap handheld TDS meters and refractometers are fine..
I have this refract..and it works just fine and has the calibration solution (fairly sure it was half that price on an xmas special or something though)

and this will work fine too..

Those should work well for you. I would suggest installing the "in" side of the tds monitor between your membrane and DI cartridge, then the "out" side after your DI cartridge. This will tell you when your membrane needs to be changed, and when your DI needs to be changed. There isn't much point in knowing what your actual TDS is of your tap water other than just for your knowledge.

You'll want to pick up some salinity calibration solution for the refractometer as well, such as the Pinpoint fluid. This will calibrate to 35ppt. Do not use DI water to calibrate with as the directions probably suggest in it.
