My last tank had all southdown sand (established in 2000) and I know then it was supposed to be the perfect mix of sand. I maintained it 14 years with no issues (well, slightly high phosphates but not too bad) I am now setting up a new 300 gallon with a big refugium and I have 7 bags of southdown I have been hoarding but I would like some help determining what other sands to mix with it. Is the particle size from southdown still considered the best breakdown?

I plan on having a lot of flow and one of the things I did not like about the southdown was that it blew all over and my new tank will have even more flow. Obviously putting some larger particles in would help but say I add some arag alive special grade reef sand - what else should I add to keep the sand bed relatively optimal?

Thanks for your help!

If you mix some larger grain sized sand whatever color tone you like in the high flow areas eventually - ie soon - the finest grains will roll away leaving the larger. Kind of interedtng natural look.

Found this on EBay, it has the recommended grain size for a "real" DSB
