Wondering if anyone could give me a quick ID on this stuff thats popping up on my rocks. System is about 10 weeks old, use RODI water, weekly water changes.
Last tests showed everything is normal -
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate >10
pH 8.0

When the first spots appeared, I thought it was coralline, but I'm not so sure now. It's dark brown/purple but has a little bit of fuzz to it. It doesn't look like cyano to me, and I have plenty of flow. I've checked out all of the more common marine algae types and haven't seen anything that remotely matches. Any thoughts?

Sorry for poor photo quality, all I have is a cell phone.

Hard to say. I agree that first impression is that it is not cyano. I assume you are referring to the blackish areas.

Is this a relatively new set up?

Yes - and you can see the "fuzziness" in the last pic. The color shows up very poorly with my phone. Its kind of like dark maroon. I had some cyano in my sump, and I've dealt with blue-green cyano in FW and the consistency is not even close. It doesn't look bad or take away from the tank, but if its something that is going to be a problem I want to start taking action now to rid the tank of it.

And yes, tank is relatively new. It's been cycled for about 2 months.

Could it be black beard algea. I know it grows in freshwater but i am not sure it grows in saltwater. It does look a lot like black beard algea. If it is, it is not a good algea

Well, the BBA I have dealt with in FW has presented totally different. I've fought about every FW algae there is in my high tech planted nano tank, and this is unlike any of it. Been searching everywhere for something similar and can't find anything. It's not unattractive though. Like I said earlier, just don't want a huge problem on my hands.

Hard to tell in that pic. Could be Red Turf Algae. If comes off in clumps, not red snot like cyano. It usually develops runners. Mixed reviews on aggressiveness of spread and ease of removal. I've had it and it sort of came and went on its own.

The Red Turf Algae comes closest to anything else I've been able to research. It doesn't have any sort of runners that I can find though. If I brush it with my fingernail, it just kind of scrapes off in that particular spot. It almost is more of a dust but it can't be blown off if a turkey baster.

I also have some of that in my tank and have for a while. Doesn't seem to be a big deal.
