Hi everybody, just looking for some advice. I'm setting up my first reef on a budget, a 27-gallon cube that I got second-hand with some equipment. I'll be running a protein skimmer (Aquatic Life Mini) as well as an HOB filter (with floss and something like Chemi-Pure, I guess), and have 30-some pounds of live rock.

I have a wrasse question. Could you recommend any wrasses that would work for my tank? I was thinking of the six-line, but it seems like they can get aggressive. I'm looking for alternatives. I'll probably have a small goby (with pistol shrimp), a clown, and perhaps a smallish wrasse.

Thanks!

Flasher Wrasse or Fairy Wrasse

Possum wrasse would be a much better choice than the 6 line. They keep to themselves & swim in & out of the rock work.

I have a six line wrasse and he's not aggressive at all I mean he flashes his spines once in a while but doesn't do anything

If you really want a six line you should get one, they're really not too aggressive and if you put all your other fish in 1st, let them settle in and then put in the wrasse it will make it less likely to be aggressive

Absolutely... Possum...don't even think about a 6line.

Yeah, I checked out the possum wrasses at a LFS, but I dunno, they just didn't do it for me...I like fish with "personality," and the six-line seems more active in general.

Yeah, I know, lol...I think I'm exercising self-control (don't we all?), I'd really like to have some nasty venomous fish or a mantis shrimp tank.

My 6 line has been a model citizen in my 55g with my Large female maroon clown, yellow corris wrasse, and scooter blenny.

But i have heard enough horror stories about them that you may want to look at other options.

Love my yellow corris wrasse. Such beautiful color.

I strongly discourage getting a sixline, but if possums dont do it for you check out Pseudocheilinops ataenia, the pink streak wrasse.

Pottery Wrasse, or Blue star. Six line get crazy. Also, make sure you have 2 inch sand bed.

I think that you mean Potters Wrasse, which like other leopard wrasses are usually listed as 'expert only'.

... and probably not great for 29g.

While I am a big fan of all species of Possum wrasses, Pseudocheilinops ataenia has a gentle personality and is excellent. On the other hand, a Potters wrasse would not do well in a 29 gallon tank.

Yeah, I'm re-thinking the wrasse thing. I love em but maybe this isn't the tank.

Possum wrasse would be fine. The potters wouldn't last.

Maybe it's time for an upgrade ;)

LOL...yeah, an upgrade before I start! No room in our little condo, or in the pocketbook.

Someday, someday, we'll have a rimless shallow monster with wrasses galore, tangs, anthias, etc. That's the dream tank. :bum:

I had to get rid of my six line, he was mean, nipped at everyone, killed a goby, and jumped out of my tank... and survived. IMO six lines belong in 75+ gallon tanks.
