Does a uv sterilizer kill phytoplankton? If so should it be run just during the day? Or all the time?

Is a uv sterilizer actually necessary in a well maintained reef aquarium?

Nope, practically useless device how most people use them in this hobby but some still swear by them. Just depends on who you ask.

Any phyto that passes through will likely be killed.

I run a uv and find its fantastic...only when I use it for what I bought it for though - knocking out a algae or bacteria bloom.
