Friend of mine is looking to buy an ATB Skimmer, no BK's, Ro's or anything else, ATB only. He has a 130 custom tank, 35g sump, mushrooms, starburst and leather corals. 10 fish the biggest being a Sail fin (6" long, he knows he will have to move this fish out of his tank due to limitations), probably med bio load. Which ATB skimmer would best suit him, no plans for a bigger tank;

ATB 840
ATB 8.5 Deluxe
ATB 1050A

I'm thinking 840 or 8.5 Deluxe. 1050A might be too much.

1050A is too much. When I had mine on just the 120g and 50g sump, it did not perform all that well. Now that I added a 40, 50, and 100g sump to the 120g it does much better, though I'm pushing it pretty hard.

He should be fine with just the 840 if he's only planning on keeping softies and some larger fish. If he plans to bump up to SPS or Gigs/Mags he may want to consider the 8.5 Deluxe.

840 v2 IMO. That skimmer is balanced to near perfection.

That's what I have been suggesting but he is looking at the 8.5 deluxe which I think might be overkill, maybe not, not sure.

No need to pay the extra imo for a skimmer that is better suited for a 180-225 gallon tank.

^^^^ I hear ya, he is going with the 840. 8.5 deluxe, lot of bucks, nice skimmer but overkill to me IMO.

If you remember Bayoupr I purchased a 1050 Deluxe from you awhile back that I ended up using on a 120 sps display. Although it could EASILY handle much, much more volume it is rockin on my system. I do have a heavy load on the 120 but it works awesome!! Best skimmer I have ever owned so I personally feel it should produce good results especially if he/she ends up adding more livestock down the road.

I remember Tom. I don't think his sump has the space for the Deluxe.
