So a local reefer is tearing down his tank due to losing all his fish to Ich. He's going back to fresh water. He will give me the rock for free. There are some really nice shaped pieces.. So my question is how long does the rock have to say out of the water to kill the Ich. Or is there a quicker way to kill of the Ich

Thanks

72 days fallow, just like it was your display tank. This will also allow the rock to cure and reduce chances of you having a cycle in your DT.

out of water, just wait till the rock dries.

I would do a bleach and water solution let it sit for a day then use new water with water conditioner to neutralize the bleach. Let rock sit out until dry and your good to go

Bleach....seriously? Just put it in a clean plastic garbage can with some saltwater and a powerhead. Leave it in there for a month and you will be all set. Really wasteful bleaching and drying out perfectly good live rock. 72 days is a ridiculously long time to wait. That is the most extreme case of ich surviving found. It will be gone in a 2-3 weeks without a host. Add a heater to speed up the life cycle of the parasite if you like. Some of you guys are really paranoid about ich.

exactly!!

I would put it in a clean container with 1.009 saltwater for about a month. Put in a heater set at 80-82, and a power head.

You'll be fine.

Just to play devils advocate, it's pretty easy to let the rock sit for two and a half months and it would be horrible if the rock gave all your fish ich. Sure it seems excessive, but all disease control measures are usually excessive; that's why they really prevent disease. Most men who have unprotected sex with women who are HIV positive do not get infected (as HIV is difficult to transmit without fluid to blood contact; women are much more likely to be infected by a man than vice versa because of their receptive genital tract). Nonetheless, I think most of us would agree that the small chance of getting HIV is worth using a condom. Same principle applies here. Just my $0.02. Nice score on some free rock!
