Hi Guys, hopefully this thread is in the right spot - i did run up part of this thread over in the equipment section too.

My aim is to run frags under different lighting and review the results after a year, depending if one type takes a turn for the worse or shows no promise. Corals are mirrored so they can be compared, where possible.

I'm running a 150w 14k SMG halide from guppies (in shop fitter fitting with UV glass added) vs a 120w full spectrum ebay led, the 120w is pulling about 50w from the wall, its sitting too close to the corals to run at full power. I have also pulled off the lenses from the ebay unit, After running leds for 5 years or so, I'm convinced wide angle and lots of coverage is best, no spotlighting and nice mix of color.

Ive also setup my new sunlight tank, a 2ft cube tank well 24x24x18. While i would not call this tank a full sunlight tank. it does get daylight for the entire day and receives about 4 hours of direct sun, some of those four hours are direct sunlight some are filtered through lattice work and some is actually reflected back from my DIY reflector. Ive noticed most sunlight tanks need protection from too much direct sun, so I hope this works well.

I was amazed by how much the mirror on the top of the tank reflects back into the tank, in daylight conditions its almost double (did a quick lux meter check), i doubt its double due to losses but its impressive, plus it sends light directly down rather than just the window side. The mirror sits at a 45 degree angle. Outside i actually have a large mirror that catches the 10am to 11am bracket, the tank gets full sun, all be it reflected two times, but hard to see any loss of light, the sun just hammers for PAR.

To my shock, i looked over at my current tanks and thought YUK, they are wayyyy tooo blue! nothing beats sunlight for color, theres just something about it, even if the corals are brown, they are beautiful to look at, polyp extension is the first thing i noticed, these guys love MR SUN.

These tanks share my sump with my main tank, I have the flow in the tank setup fairly equal as this could impact on results.

Running undetectable No3 and No4, on salifert kits anyway, need to get myself a hanna. Vinegar dosing keeps these at zero and i run a fairly small skimmer- alk at 7 to 8, some say this is the best when dosing vingar, calc is around 420, mag 1350. Temp around 24.5 to 26. on max swing. I dose amino as my readings are so low.

and the LED side - this setup has been up for a few weeks, the LED side is looking much nicer at this stage, and not just because its under 20k lighting, if i move the coral under halide you can see its far more colourful from being under led, so the led is really driving pigmentation on certain corals.

Halide Side.

As you can see im going all in cheap here, SMG globes are not the bottom of the barrel but not far off, tempted to throw a 10k Ushio in. But as Im also pitching this against a cheap ebay unit it kinda makes some sense.

So Ive had some of these corals under the LED for a few months, and I have to say im pretty impressed with this ebay unit, i was so skeptical to start with, but my bargain basement acro I picked up has turned electric blue from a terrible brown, I also fragged a bit off and threw it in my main tank, it actually just stayed brown with tiny blue tips, but it grew twice as fast.

hope you enjoy the ride, Im going to do a range of close shots of each coral an see how we go.

a quick shot of my main tank, 3x2x2 running for a few years, recently under T5 and halide, DIY led before that. Yep i know tang is now asking for bigger tank, dont worry buddy i hear ya!

oh and check out the 3m return pipes from the 2ft, this was a pain but had to be done. Im a little worried about temperature loss or gain along the long returns. See how it goes.

Definitely a neat project, how often will you be updating this thread?

Hopefully every two weeks, I need to frag up a bit more this weekend to make sure I have similar in each tank. Mr sun tank will be getting some of my diy LEDs for night time viewing and maybe some royal blues for a daylight boost in the higher kelvins just to tease a bit more pigmentation out, most sun tanks are on the brown side and need some high k addition. Or some kessils

My aim is to have the entire tank run off the sun and also solar, hoping to run about 200 - 400w of solar to cover the LEDs, returns, ecotechs, skimmer and heater. I'll be cooling the tank with a 1000 litre IBC, using passive cooling, a chiller will stand by for those 43c days , yes 43c ! , at night I will pump water out of the IBC to collect the cool night air. In winter months this may be opposite and run through a solar polypipe coil to collect heat.

This will be a prototype tank, if I can run it purely from natural resources I'll double the tank size and setup a peninsula tank. I'll close down my current 3ft tank etc. about my only carbon use would be from the sea water delivery truck.

More money for corals fish and toys, speaking of toys my two MP40s arrive this week !! Can't wait for those , mmm two in a two foot tank..... Should be interesting.

For LEDs I'm leaning on getting a kessil, as I can't have a light over the tank as this will block my mirror, a kessil or two can shoot light in from the sides.

I'll be getting very nerdy around the power usage and solar statistics along with temperature etc hopefully I can have live stats on everything and a nice % graph showing green vs mains power usage.

Hopefully I can bring down my $100 a month power usage to zero, passive cooling and the use of the sunlight will have the biggest effect. Pumps skimmer etc would save maybe 30c a day, but all adds up I guess.

Aright time for a bit of an update. Ill try and keep these simple with just IF they are led or halide, dates etc. Ill try keep these updates running every two weeks, any less and growth is hard to spot on most coral.

I should have checked and matched camera settings its automatically adjusting stuff which will impact color. More to come tomorrow.

Quick video on my sunlight tank.

observation so far running on sunlight is polyp extension, they love MR Sun, i need to do some comparison growth shots too, i swear its growing at an insane rate. All my tanks are central plumbed and running NSW.

Enjoy,

Hi All, I have shut down the my 3 tanks and setup a new sunlight only tank. After seeing the positive response from corals under sun light.

Good luck with your tank, please do post pics when it is all done and stocked.

Hi all,

Man I was hoping this would go on for the whole year as well. I might be of some assistance for your thoughts and what everyone else was wondering, which light works best. Here is my current stats project, everything will be aggregated through MiniTab17 for some real data, if you can help please check it out! http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2457912

I've done similar comparisons and have recently been considering doing a similar one with LED vs T5 and possibly throwing in MH just for those who will never give up the belief that MH is still the best.

I've been successfully growing SPS coral for 25+ years and I'm doing exceedingly well with my Kessils. But I won't dispute T5s. I had great success with MH but don't miss those damned things one moment.

Having said all that, here's what I would find problematic with the OPs original plan. The 150w HQI 14K may not be the best choice as most would tell you that their best growth and color came from a 250W 14K, Radium or even the infamous 6500K iwasaki.

Choosing an off-brand LED and then modifying it so that it's not even functioning as the manufacturer intended offers more variables than we want to consider.

Sun, love the stuff, use it on my grow out tanks and SPS basque in it but it doesn't produce the best color.

This seems like a great plan... I'm very interested in the results.
