View Full Version : Are there any clams that will damage corals?

I noticed the bottom inch of an acro starting to bleach. No real explanation for it as the acro was growing well and the colors looked great.

Starting inspecting the backside of the base and noticed that something appeared to have bored a whole in the back and had some tentacles sticking out.

I used a knife to pry it loose and it resembled a tiny clam but with a couple feelers.

Unfortunately I damaged it prying it out so I don't have a pic.

Any idea what it was? This acro is on the top rocks so I'm not sure how this thing would have even gotten up there. Doesn't look like it could swim.

Sounds more like STN with the acro. search this board using keywords "slow tissue necrosis"

Maybe a turkey wing clam or maybe a barnacle? I doubt it is killing your acro.

Not sure. It did manage to burrow a hole right into the base of the acro itself. It was about 10mm deep.

some clams do etch their way into solid rock and coral base, it is possible but the damage would be restricted to the clam base.

I'll see if I can take a pic today.

There is a war coral in close proximity, which I've since pruned back, that I haven't ruled out as a culprit.
