That would be a peppermint angelfish (Centropyge boylei). They are very expensive and very rare.

Where?
It was 'reported' a few years ago, that the Peppermint in Oahu was $30000, but it was on loan to the aquarium and never really for sale...
The batch of Peps last year seemed to be priced in the ~$20000 range

What a complete waste of money lol. Sure they look nice, but the price is based strictly on their rarity. There are a number of damsels that look nice also but are inexpensive because they are plentiful. I never really understood why something is desired because it is rare (other than as an investment)....which a fish definitely is not. That being said, if I had millions of dollars to throw around, I would probably have a tankful of them :-)

Of course it's mostly based on their rarity - what else would drive the price?

The fact that they have to use rebreathers and go way down deep to get them is a pretty big factor as well.

A-MEN! I will never understand this thought process either....to each their own.

Depending on how 'popular' a fish or coral is, can drive the price (high or low).

That has a much smaller impact than scarcity.

Taking price out of it I find peppermint angels to be some of the nicest small angels. That being said I would not pay more than $200-$300 for one. If it was a large angel I would probably up my limit a little.

Agreed, but it still exists. However, you wanted to know what else can drive price.

Or less... Ted nor Drew will tell you what they cost last year but i bet it was less than 20k... Both of Drews are still alive and doing well from what little posts he has about them. I guess when your building a 30,000g system in your house your time is consumed with that and not the peps

When you look at 20k like 20$ its all relative... if you don't think of 20k like that its hard to comprehend

It was a rhetorical question.
