View Full Version : DI resin recharge

Hi all,

I have a couple of used up DI resin canisters from BRS (I think) and I decided to try and recharge the resin today. So I followed the instructions here:
http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-09/nftt/index.php

When I added the NaOH (lye) solution some of beads turned blue (or dark). These ones were at the top of the base solution, but didn't exactly float and give the same separation shown in the photos in the link. I separated off these top, blue beads. Then I took the bottom beads and treated them with HCl (muriatic acid) and they turned lighter orange, not the purple discussed in the link.

My question is whether the BRS beads use a color changing in the anion rather than the cation beads? This would make sense to me since they turned dark in the base solution. I just want to make sure I did the recharge process correctly.

Thanks for the help!
