I recently bought a 75 with a 20 long sump. I was taking the baffles out because I didn't like the setup the previous owner had. I attempted to replace the baffles and this happened...

obviously this tank is trashed now. I had and extra 20 long laying around so I am going to attempt to use it. I'm going for a very simplistic design sump. I might add an external refugium later but for now I just needed room for some bio - balls and my skimmer/heater/return pump.

Bummer. IMO, leave the bioballs out.

What is the reason for leaving the bio - Balls out? I'm just wondering. It seems as though there are mixed feelings about using them in reef tanks. What would you replace them with as far as bio/mech filtration

Alot of people feel they turn into nitrate factories. I don't use them personally.

What would be a good replacement for them? Floss with some phos media in between?

Wait for the next $1/gallon sale and get a 40B from Petco.

I've always used some live rock/sand in a sump compartment instead of bio balls.

I have under flow teeth cut out on one of my baffles so this would restrict my choices on using sand. The previous setup had a deep sand bed, but it was not set up to my liking nor did it function well. live rock could go in the section, but would it still serve a filtering purpose without the help of a DSB or sand at all for that matter?

Absolutley. I keep one section of the sump just for "leftover" live rock. It will still be full of beneficial bacteria, worms, pods, etc

Great! I will look for some extra rubble live rock at places. I just really want everything to be right the first time I set up saltwater. I would rather do it right than have so much money invested and my tank crash
