On my newly setup deep blue 80... where the water falls into the overflow is crazy loud.... so loud I had to turn off the sump for bed haha...

Plumbing is pretty quiet, skimmer and return pump as well... it's just the splashing of the water falling over the overflow...

I have the grate as low as i can and still maintain a full display... the drain pipe has very little room to be taller, return pump is slow as i can put it...etc...

I need suggestions to quiet this thing... thanks

I had a similar issue with loud water noises and I was able to quiet mine by closing my ball valve slightly on my return pump.

Your standpipe in the overflow controls the water level in the overflow, so making the standpipe(s) on the drain(s) would be the route you want to go if the noise is coming from the water falling into the overflow box.

What kind of set up is it?
What is restricting the height of the standpipe(s)?

first is the water level low in the overflow box? If so you can try different stand pipes.

I use this method https://www.facebook.com/SmaydaAquatics
Do a goople search there are other options.

If the tank water level is high and the overflow level is high. either open the drain ball valve more. or close the return ball valve more

So I had the same issue and here is how I solved it.

I added two 90 degree elbows connected together to make a 180 and driller a small hole on the one right on top of the drain. This quiets things down a bunch, but still needs a bit more help.
I also added a piece of pipe to the drain down at the sump end of the drain, which goes into the water line.

This makes the whole setup drastically less noisy. I have added some pictures below for illustration of the top piece.

Good luck. I hope this helps.

do you have an internal or external overflow? If it's internal I would ASAP turn it into a herbie and put your return line up and over the back. If it's external then I dont have an answer for you, never had one. May be harder to fine tune but I would think you could use a herbie setup in an external overflow also, I'd suggest you ask in the DIY Forum, you will get a great answer within 24 hrs

It should quiet down with some time (algae & slime getting established).

What is the height that the water falls before hitting the water level inside the overflow? If your over 1 inch I'd think of ways to increase the stand pipe height(s).

Pics would help. Good luck.
