Hey,
Thanks for stopping in! This is my build thread for my newest tank, a Deep Blue 45g Peninsula tank. My roommate and I have both been in the hobby for 10+ years and have had many tanks, but this time we decided to do something different. We have very different ideas about what the best/most efficient way to run a tank is, and we thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast the different things you can do with the same tank. We found matching peninsula tanks and decided to put them back to back.

The tank is named for its aquascaping, where I wanted to bring a little bit of rock out of the water. I don't really know why, just wanted to try it out.

This is going to basically be a photo drop thread. I take a lot of pictures, as I like to track the progress of the tank.

First tank stand I have ever built, I think it went pretty well for not having any idea what I was doing.http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c368/reefgeek/Just%20the%20Tip/2A779C5D-0054-4DF3-BB4F-4773BADCE6C6_zpsbmxkmswb.jpg (http://s31.photobucket.com/user/reefgeek/media/Just%20the%20Tip/2A779C5D-0054-4DF3-BB4F-4773BADCE6C6_zpsbmxkmswb.jpg.html)

Aquascaped using Haitian rock, I love this stuff. Just be sure to SCRUB it.

I like the idea of setting these up side by side for comparison. What are going to be the major differences between the two?

Correct me if im wrong but isn't it a bad idea to put goby's in a new tank when the sand bed is pretty clean?

Mine will be more of a mixed reef, while Charles' tank will be a Caribbean biotope with gorgs, zoas, and macro algae

Probably. If it was more of sand-sifting species, I would have waited, but they were in a tank with very little sand (1/16") at the store and were eating mysis only, so my tank has to be a step up for that, even with new sand. I will feed them mysis, pellets, and cyclopeeze with everything else in my tank in the mean time

What kind of light is that?

Was thinking of doing one of these with rbta and clowns.

Look forward to your progress.

its a 2x 150watt halide and 2x65 watt compact combo, but I don't run the compacts.

I am planning on some anemones/clowns for sure. Let me know when you get yours up!

Hey reefers and reefettes,
Went shopping today and got some goodies for the tank.

Awesome nonphotosythetic gorgonian (Swiftia? Still need to ID it properly)

Im really hoping the green star polyps take over "The tip" and give the tank a nice florescence. the candy canes weren't doing very well in my nano, so they were one of the test corals for this tank, I think they are doing much better.

I got a green Montipora capricornus and a green Montipora digitata frag and broke it into a bunch of pieces and glued them onto the arching rock, I hope to get a few more varieties of Montipora and let that be a cool color contrast piece.

Thanks! For flow I am using
1 jaebo dc3000 return pump, on setting 1, the lowest setting.
1 Tunze 6025, pointed at the surface since it's the only angle it won't blow the entire sand bed around

And yeah, i had a tall rock tower in my old cube that stuck out of the water.
Once in a while I'd find a snail or crab up there. :D

Thanks Cody, Its actually all from my girlfriend's Galaxy s5 or my roommates s4!
She is a professional photographer, so I really should have her tank "good" pictures of the tank sometime.

Looks great, love the scape!

Haha its really funny, the astrea snail hangs out there sometimes, I have a picture of it somewhere. Nice little addition to an otherwise regular rockscape.

Are you two using differents types of filtration, lighting, additives or is the main difference going to be the contents of the tanks?
completely different everything. I'm using 2x150 watt 20k halides and he is using 1x 250 watt 14k bulb and 2x65 watt pcs (kicking it old school, but you really can't beat MH)
He is using a fluidized sand bed in a recirculating reactor, and heavy water changes. I am using a skimmer and gfo and carbon in a twolittlefishes reactor, and will be using an ATS as soon as I set it up, probably after the holidays. I will also be using a dosing pump for mag, cal, and alk.

Love the scape, and really cool gorg (the red one)! What kind of feeding regimen are you doing to keep it healthy? I'd like to venture into some NPS in the future.

Thanks, I'm actually still trying to ID it so if anyone has an idea, please let me know!
Right now, I'm just feeding the tank, but pointing everything at the gorg so it has first dibs. Been feeding a mix of mysis (the juice seems to elicit a feeding response every time), Fauna Marin LPS pellets all crushed up and mixed in the juice, and a vitamin food soak. I need to get Fauna Marin gorgonian food, but I haven't had a chance yet.

I did the unspeakable yesterday.. I added an anemone... or 18!

There was a rock of bleached out anemones that my roommate, myself, and the store owner couldn't identify at the LFS so I got a killer deal, and I couldn't let the poor guys stay there, so I took them home.
As I started peeling them (aka hammer and chisel) off the rock, I realized I may be making a grave mistake. Its a new tank, and thats a HUGE bioload. Nems are disgusting creatures.

Anyway, I threw them in, and they attached immediately, faster than putting a frag with super glue on it in there. So far so good, but its day 2... so fingers are crossed.

After being in my tank for 10 minutes or so, the tentacles got shorter and started to "bubble" so I think I may have 18 new BTAs in there.

Now I'm really tempted to take my pair of clowns from the 7 gallon and let them have free reign.

I woke up this morning (afternoon, but don't judge me) and had a "mother's intuition" moment and ran to the tank. Glad I did, cause one of the anemones was sucked into the tunze! AHHH. This is why anemones suck haha. Anyway, I unplugged it and moved the powerhead to the sand over by the other anemones. I don't think the anemone is hurt because he was actually inflated and tentacles out inside of the powerhead, and he didnt splooge anemone juice all over the tank. Im going to throw some extra carbon in the reactor today, and possible replace the phosban as well.

I had time today to glue the new additions down. May I introduce Sungonian Island!
They aren't opened all the way yet, but they were very skinny at the store so I had a chance to try to rescue them all. Each colony has some dead spots (some more than others) but I think they are doing much better so far.

Well, I was home sick today, so I decided it was time for some tanking. Removed two of the 5 troublesome BTAs and cleaned out the sump. Also changed the media in my reactor and organized all my fish stuff (tools, food, supplements ect)
I would say it was successful for the most part.

Took the yellow gorgonian out, and put it back in the 9g (it was there originally but was getting beat up by peppermint shrimp that has since been taken care of aka eaten by a borrowed angler)

I did add some very orange tunicates and some purple and blue sponge, as well as a very cool lancer's dragonette. I collected them all myself this weekend. The dragonette is sand colored and buries himself up to his eyes when he isn't pod hunting. Pretty cool little guy.

Also I collected a seahorse for a friend, and my roommate got some goodies as well (sponges, pipefish, dragonette pair, inverts)

I moved some corals around today, and glued a lot of the random zoanthid frags I had floating around down to the top flat rock that I have deemed to be "Zoa rock"

Also, the Cynaria and scleronepthya that I had moved into the nano tank, I moved back. The Cynaria didnt have space to fully expand when the dendros and tubastreas were out all the way, and I don't think the scleronepthya had enough food in there to sustain itself. It went downhill pretty quickly. We will see how they recover in this tank.

Note to myself: I changed the reactor media yesterday and put half carbon and half phosphate remover.

Update:
Got a new skimmer yesterday. Swapped out my Bubble Magus 3.5 for an E-shops S-150. Plugged it in last night and Im already getting some nice foam in the collection cup. I think I will end up making it a little drier skimmate, but for now I want to see what this thing can do.

Also, the Red Gorgonian has been suffering lately. Despite a lot of feedings (which I have moved from 5-6 days a week down to 2-3 because of algae issues) he is losing a lot of tissue and I think he may be a goner. Really sad about this because he was doing very well for a long time, but the leopard wrasse is almost constantly picking at it and keeping it closed so I can't feed him enough. For now he is in the 9 gallon and the yellow gorgonian will be the new featured piece on Sungorgian Island

Thanks. As for the gorgonian, the yellow looks better than it has in a long time, but the red one was a couple of factors. First I got busy in real life and I didnt feed the tank or give it the attention that it (it being the red gorg) needed, so it started to lose body weight. This happened in a matter of a week or a week and a half. Secondly, As soon as some tips went bare, my leopard wrasse decided to pick at it like it was his job. This kept it closed up and not feeding which accelerated the tissue loss. Then algae came, then hermits to eat the algae. Gorgs don't like permanent hermit visitors so basically it would only open once or twice a week and I just couldn't pump enough food in to him. Maybe with an automatic feeding set up it would have been possible, but I'm not sure even then with the wrasse.

The red gorgonian didnt make it RIP. So I rearranged the island and made it a little smaller so there is more viewable angles for the corals I placed in the background. Im pretty bummed about the gorg, but on the positive side the yellow one looks much better.
The corals aren't happy because the lights had been off, I turned them on since the NPS looked happy.

I have been slacking on pictures lately. A couple of days ago I bought a tank breakdown that I am planning on setting up, but it came with a bunch of corals (25-30 pieces of corals) that all went in here. I plan to sell a couple (I literally don't have space for some of them), and some I glued in replacement of other pieces. So now I added: 4 Acros, Acans, Blastos, Zoas, Montis, Poccilliopora, a very cool purple sea fan, and a smaller gorg as well.

I will try to get some pics soon.

The yellow gorg is photosynthetic. The gorge were doing well until a week ago. I had an algae bloom hit, and the gorg got covered and stayed retracted. Still trying to keep it clean, but its a work in progress. Thank you very much for the kind words.

Changed the media (carbon and phoslock) yesterday. Today everything seems perkier. Hopefully I can fend off some of this algae thats growing on, and irritating the gorgonians. Mass feedings have their pros and cons for sure

Your Tubastrea look great. How do you get them to stay open? It looks like they are opened all the time.
Unfortunately, they aren't open all the time. But they are open at least once a day. I just reserve picture time for when they are open because they really make the tank look a lot better.

Thank you, my roommate's goal was to make the tank look like where we go diving, and he is getting pretty close I would say.

They are sergeant major damsels.
Thanks for the kind words.

I fed my tank two foods it had never had before: bloodworms and squid. Bloodworms not such a hit (although everything did eventually eat it) but squid, oh yeah! Loaded as many corals as I could with the squid and the fish were eating it out of their mouths faster than I could syringe it back. I went through 3 cubes of squid, 1 of bloodworms and 1 of gut loaded brine. Talk about over feeding... the things I do for these NPS corals haha

Did some serious rearranging to get the anemone out, still have one left but I buried her pretty deep in the rock and I think she will pop out the back side this time around. Added a couple more pieces and moved some stuff around.

I owe this thread a bunch more pictures (I will try to photo dump soon) because there have been a lot of changes in filtration and livestock. anyway here is a picture from about 12:00am this morning.

Thanks a lot! I have been very fortunate with a great selection of corals to choose from here in Miami, and I give a lot of credit to my artist girlfriend for helping choose more aesthetic spots for the corals.

Yes it is! Thanks, I got two about a year ago, and the other didnt make it past a couple months, but this one is thriving and I believe is starting to turn to a male over the past month or so! I will update with that if it continues.

Haha thanks! I really like the Haitian live rock. It comes in filthy, so you have to clean it really well, but the shapes are amazing for aquascaping.

Yeah, I will get a new one in the next day or two!

That is a different story all together. If they arent extending, feed daily. That means they dont have the energy to extend to catch food. Once a coral has reached that stage, its an uphill battle. They need lots of food to catch up to the weight and dietary requirements to continue feeding. I recommend building a sort of case around them that you can feed into but the fish wont steal from. That allows you to spot feed and get a majority of the food to the polyp. Otherwise crabs, shrimp, starfish, and fish will come steal the food.

I cheated. Took the T5 light off and replaced it with a LED that was intended to be temporary, but once I saw the all blue led POP, I couldnt go back.
Did the T5HO for color and growth. Now I need the growth to stop and color is always more fun whenits adjustable.

Picture with samsung s6 and orange glasses!

Hey everyone,
It's a sad truth, but Just the Tip has been taken down. We are having the house tented and with my current work schedule, I am unable to give this tank the attention it needs. I want to thank you all for your kind words and support through this adventure.

Happy reefing,
