Tank I just built is 4 feet, by 8" x 12".
The main fish will be a pair of snowflake clowns, but they need to be added last for sure.
I'm thinking of a neon and clown gobies, and maybe a firefish. Any other ideas? The tank will be open topped, so no crazy jumpers.

I'd throw a shrimp or 2 in there too.

Firefish are no strangers to jumping.

some cleaner shrimp would work great

Firefish are no strangers to jumping.

Thanks for that heads up. I would have checked prior to purchase, but now I don't have to. So:
1 neon goby
1 yellow clown goby
2 snowflake clown
And.....?
Remember, it's on 20 gal, but 4 feet long so I'm looking for mostly little, peaceful options.

The sand will be black (so the snowflakes really sow off) and I think the white stripes on the clean shrimp is a nice choice too.

I'll mostly be growing a bunch of zoanthids and Ricordia on a series of island rocks, so I'll want some mid-column fish.

Any other ideas?

you're at the max limit IMO. it might be a 4 foot tank but it's still a 20G tank afterall. you'll need to consider the depth which is only 8 inches and the height is only 12 inches as well. after putting in sand bed, rocks, corals and power heads, the swimming space would get much smaller. the clowns especially the female will become aggressive and own the tank when mature. just my .02.

That's cool with me. So the 2 gobies and the pair of clowns? A few shrimp, an emerald crab and call it "full"?

i would call it "full" if it were me. other people's opinions might vary however. good luck :)
