I have a manual bypass for flushing the ro membrane. How often and for long is the proper way to use it?

In a perfect world, you'd flush the membrane for about a minute after you were done using the system each time, and turn off the flush and the feedwater simultaneously. That's not practical for a lot of people, so once a week is better than once a month.

True that.

When finishing making water I flush the system for a minute. I then shut the water off. I leave the flush valve open. When I start up my system the next time it is already in flush mode. The only time my flush valve is closed is when I am actually making water.

While we know that flushing afterwards is the most critical, I also flush before. It does remove the stagnate water in the pre-filtration, and membrane housing.
