I have a small frag of green star polyps that are growing rapidly. Currently I have it on a rock but I was wondering if I can just put it flat on the sand since it looks kinda like a carpet.

Are there any disadvantages to this?

No problem. It's probably better this way, being that GSP can be a PITA to remove from live rock sometimes.

My wife and I like the way GSP flows back and forth in the current, but make sure you keep it isolated or it will quickly get out of hand.

Put it by the back glass and it will grow there, I have some of mine growing on the plastic overflows

I have done the same. Interestingly, they seem to migrate across the back glass. Dying off from where they started but then thrive as they move forward to new areas across the back wall.

Be careful what it gets near! It will not only spread rapidly, but it can overtake and kill other corals, usually much nicer and more expensive ones than itself. I, like many others, keep a medium sized rock of it in the middle of my sandbed, aboit 2-3 inches away from anything else. And to answer your question, yes, it can grow over the sand, not extremely well, but it will do it home the less. Mine has ~3/4" spots that have grown off the end of the rock and over just sand. Good luck

If conditions are good, it will grow just fine on the sand.
It will spread to anything it touches though.
Seriously considering getting rid of this clump in the middle, keep having to trim it.

It's hard to tell in this picture, but in my tank I have the GSP isolated on it's own island rock for that very reason that it can get out of control!

It looks cool when it's moving with the current, I agree.

I have green star polyps and xenia in a display refugium. I let them grow uncontrolled because they filter the water for my display tank!

I prefer to isolate gsp to a single rock once it spreads it can be difficult to control
