40x 24 x 20 83 gal DT sps dom reef
Would a pair of tunze 6095 be adequate or do I need the larger 6105s?
appreciate input from the pros here

6095 will work on your display. The 6105 is larger but it really creates some flow!

I have both on a 48x30. Two 6095s is all you need. The 6105 is almost twice the size of the 6095.

For flow and aesthetics, the 6095s will be perfect.

Well it's been a few years and my reef has been stable and slow going in terms of livestock,
i notice that i have dead spots and that with the 2x 6095 i can create a small 1" wave, but minimal movement on of my orals the bottom of the tank.

Can't decide what to do to increase the flow.
Should i get another 6095 which i love or replace the 6095s with a pair of 6105?
i'm a little concerned about the size and aesthetics of 6105 x2, but i'm sure that will get me plenty of flow.

Is 2x6105 overkill, or should i just stick with my current6095x2 or should i just add another 6095?
Again i am aiming for a SPS dominated reef.
Thanks!

I would have likely gone with the 6105’s in large part because of their wider flow. You’d never need all their power but the wider flow would result in better overall current throughout the tank at all levels. That said, before adding another pump or replacing what you have, one other thing to consider is the placement of them. Not sure how you have yours positioned in the tank but placement can make a HUGE difference. Intuition leads most to place them at opposite ends facing down the length of the tank towards eachother. but with a pair of 6095’s, I would test them on the back wall at opposite ends of the tank but with them pointing towards the front viewing pane. Then play with the on/off timing to get it just right. The flow would bounce off the front glass creating a bigger rise and fall in the water level but the end result would be a large current throughout the levels of the tank. I would also test them both at one end of the tank at different levels pointing down the length of the tank and again, play with the on/off timing to get the largest wave at the opposite end. The end result would be more current at all levels of the tank down the entire length.

I have both the 6105 and the 6095. I also installed the 6205 shroud to the 6105. This really makes the pump much more versatile with a wider spread and allows for higher flow that moves more water throughout the tank. I think the 6105 has too direct of flow and must be aimed away from coral, whereas the 6205 shroud lets you aim it directly through coral with a very strong push of water without it being destructive. The C clamps also hold the 6105 in place better than the 6095s. The 6095s just don’t seem as secure when aiming.

I think the 6095s are best served on the back wall for SPS tanks. They just don’t have much punch past 24-30”. The 6105 can reach 50-60” and 40-50” with the 6205 shroud, but the cone of flow is 2-3xs as wide.

If it weren’t for the cleaning hassle in comparison to the vortechs I’d say Tunzes are hard to beat.

I have two 6095s on my 150g 5 foot tank and they work just fine on it. I've often thought of adding a couple of real small pumps in the back corners just for kicks but I haven't seen a real reason to do that as all the corals seem to be pretty happy and I'm not seeing any dead spots.

While the cleaning of em can be a hassle, the ability to direct the flow is priceless. I miss my tunze pumps. :(
I agree though, larger pump and and tone it back or put the 6205 shroud on it as suggested.
