I like Reef Saver too. Did you ask for big pieces or is that just the way they came? I bought 5 lb and asked for softball sized just to try it. Looks like I'll replace my Petco rock with it.

Any idea when it will get coralline?

Just the way they sent it. Once I add frags with coraline on it it'll take off and I'll be cursing about it like everyone else lol

In the biocube once I start stocking it I will. Weekly water changes on my frag tank keeps everything at bay though.

I tried to "Convince" her I needed a "Frag" tank...she wasn't buying it. I have everything for it also besides rock...and heck.. I can get that easy with a few trades to the lfs.

When I get home tonight I think I'm going to try it...I will post my results soon after i'm sure. I will also start a build thread. Nothing fancy like my 72g but I have the following free equipment to use.

29G Cube, 165watt Full Spec LED light (Same I run on my 72), 2x Hydor 425, MJ1200 for return, JBJ ATO, 250watt heater and the protein skimmer made for the biocube (will have to be upgraded).

Now that I got your attention some updates,on the biocube. Tank appears to be cycled and seems stable. That being said it's time to pick out my live stock. I'll probably get my first fish in there this weekend. Get a CUC in there, snails, shrimp and mayve a few crabs or something, not a huge crab fan but I like a good diverse CUC. I'll slowly start adding corals as well. I have a small zoa in there and a Monti to see how some easier SPS does in a new set up.

She got home and I got an entire ear full...let's just say I slept in the bed, but about 2ft away lol. Was told I could only run it if I funded everything from selling frags from my 72. Works for me :) Did u custom make that little frag tank...love it

Now some photos of current livestock.

I had a couple questions about my filtration and it made me realize I never mentioned it. In the first chamber the water drains into filter floss then there is a pack of purigen and a sack of chemipure elite. This is my first go with both purigen and chemipure so we'll see how it goes. From my understanding chemipure is basically carbon and gfo in a nylon bag. Then in the second chamber is my skimmer which I'm thinking of replacing. It's the aquaeuros nano skimmer and it worked well on my Nuvo but I can't seem to get anything on the bigger tank. I'm currently researching its replacement. In the third chamber there is my ATO, return pump and heater. Beyond that weekly water changes of about 20% will handle the rest. I also started dosing Bionic 2 part and mag.

I just saw the add on URS ha
Chamber two currently has my skimmer. It's an aquaeuros nano skimmer. It's literally useless in this tank. In my Nuvo I got decent skim out of it but I'm currently looking to upgrade. Thinking about the cadlights pls 50 elite.

Yea I thought about using the Reef Octopus bh-100 on the 29 Biocube...it might fit in chamber 2.

I went to setup that tank, but then I realized I might want something a little bigger...like the solo 34 or even a 40 breeder.. But the ez of the AIO tanks is higher on my list.

I saw a few good condition Aquamaxx-1 for sale on here for $125 that would work perfect also.

Me too. I always liked them and this one popped up on a local forum for a good price so I jumped all over it. It's not in perfect shape, a couple minor scratches, fan is a touch noisey on the halide fixture but all in all it's definitely held up over the years. It's winter now so it's hard to say how hot the tank will get with the halide but there's enough space under it I would think with the AC and running a fan over top it should keep a good temperature. I'd like to custom make a screen top for it. The glass lid doesn't allow for as much light pennatration or heat discipation through evaporation. I'd run it open top but with the wrasse I don't trust it. I'd say out of all the tanks I've owned so far this is my favorite. A+ job people at Coralife :wavehand:

I'm using that skimmer now. It's working great and getting out a lot of junk. In just wish days it collected a full cup. Not the dark green sludge, but light brown watery sludge lol.

terrypercula
01/27/2015, 10:08 PM
Temperature never goes over 79
pH has minor swings but right in that 8-8.3 range
alk 9.0-9.5
Calcium 440-450
Mag 1350-1400

If I can keep it steady in these ranges I think I should have some decent growth considering the halide, natural light and reef brite combination.

When I changed vortech modes from reef crest to pulse mode through my Apex, I really upped my evaporation rate. I think it is because on the wave's down stroke, there's a film of water on everything that's exposed to air and a thin film succumbs to evaporation more easily.

That's pretty interesting. I definitely fully expect the screen top to at least tipple the evaporation in this tank. Which is cool I can start running kalk in my ATO again.

Wow Dave, this thing is looking sick! I'm looking back at before pictures. You don't have a huge change, but enough to make it look super good.
I never thought this wouldn't look good, BUT, I think this tank will be looking better than I thought! Wow, this will be a masterpiece forsure dude.

P.S. That branch coming out is gonna be so cool. I think branches in the tank are sooooooo sick and you can throw some beautiful SPS on there to hide the branch itself, illuminating a floating stick of sticks :D

Ya I was kinda wondering because you don't to much in there, although you do have a good amount of sps. I am seeing about .5 drop in each Alk & Calc daily. Ofc I am only testing with the API kit so who knows who accurate it is.

I am thinking about investing in some digital kits.

Not a whole lot to control. There's probably a way to make them dimmable but beyond that it's just one spectrum, one channel of lighting used for actinic supplementation and basically to show off some wild colors when the halide is off ha

I just got a LR phosphate Milwaukee mini colorimeter from Aqua Cave but haven't used it yet. I got burned on a couple of Hanna meters about 10 years ago and didn't learn. Then I bought a Hanna calcium checker two years ago and only used it 3 times and sold it. There were so many steps and it was so inaccurate (+/- 30ppm) I might as well be using API kits.

I noticed the Alk, Calcium and Mag kits from Hannah have horrible reviews. I just use the sailfert kits. it's not that difficult to use but a little more work than some other kits.

I use Red Sea pro for cal, alk, and mag. They have really nice titrator handles and it makes it really easy. For nitrate I use rea sea too. Milwaukee for phosphate and I'm getting Salifert's new potassium kit when it comes out. Super easy and super accurate. +/- 4 ppm. And of course Apex for temp, pH, ORP, and salinity. And if I get the Seneye, ammonia, and a secondary temp and pH.

02/22/2015, 07:29 AM
Yes I was thinking about Hanna's, but like other said the reviews are not the best. I currently use Salifert for Mag and don't mind the extra steps needed as long as accuracy is improved. Of course these are more expensive, but you get what you pay for imo.

More than likely I will be getting Salifert, but the digital ones look nice lol

I would say I think "InTank" has a nice one, but I supposed some lighting screen and 1/4" PVC & Zip Ties would do the same thing. I was gonna do that for my name, but I found a deal on the "InTank" one for less than half the price new.

What skimmer did you end up going with? Are you noticing a rise in NitrAtes / Phosphates, or just using as a percussion measure? I really wish my tank had 3 chambers. I pretty much have the choice to use a skimmer or media rack in chamber one and chamber two is pretty much (ATO Float, Probes, Heater ect..)

Have you used the Reef Keeper before? If so what real advantages do you get from the Apex?

The Intank baskets do look really good and I'm sure they're worth every penny. I'm just going to make a really basic three chamber basket out of black egg crate. It's going to do all I need it to. I haven't noticed any problems without a skimmer but I like having one. I got a Hydor slimskim nano. There's quite a back story with this skimmer. I bought it five years ago or so for my first tank which was a standard 20. Sold it to my friend. Not too long ago my other friend bought it off him to use in his JBJ, wanted an upgrade so I'm trading him to get it back now. I always liked it, at the time it was one of few nano in tank skimmers. It was very quiet, it was well built and it did pull decent skim consistently. Obviously 5 years later it is reliable, so I'm excited to get it back. As far as controllers go the Apex is my first experience so I can't compare it with the Reefkeeper. Most people seemed to agree for one reason or another the Apex was better so that's what I went with.

Yes the width is only like 2.25" and it needs to be like 3.25"

Would be the perfect skimmer for my build also. I think I am going to end up getting the Remora C Nano..as it best fits what I am trying to do + allows for some type of media basket...

How did your diy media basket turn out?

Man that will look amazing once it grows. I actually did the same thing with my green Monti cap frag I got last night. Only thing is it will probably grow away from the wall.
I also got a frag of red planet.. We shall see how it does. :) Did your skimmer come in yet?

I'm still running skimmerless, but all seems fine. 20% WC seem to be doing a good job although I wish I could get the finer particles out of the water even when using floss.

I'm trying to graft my green cap with my purple cap and red cap. Haha red planet is a beautiful piece for sure. No skimmer yet, estimated delivery was the 11th I believe.

I'm assuming you mean the ones upper right ish haha they're more of a red in person. They called poinsettias. A little pricier polyp but definitely one of my favorites.

Skimmer finally came in tonight. It's a little bigger than I expected, so some modification was needed to make it fit. However it seems very well built and is absolutely dead silent. I'm kind of amazed at how quiet this thing is. I also like how easy it is to adjust. Time will tell on what kind of skim it can pull. So far I like it a lot.

So when u say they were more expensive are you saying around a hundred for range or more?

My LFS has them for $75 per or less if you buy more. I got two for $120. They seem to be slower growers for sure I only have five polyps and that's like two months later. My LFS only has 8-10 on their main colony so they don't sell them often, a few frags every 6 months or so.

Ok and they are pretty awesome looking. For zoas isn't it usually the case that the more expensive they are they grow slower? Just Wat I have kinda generally heard

Eh kind of only because if they grow slower there's less of them and it's a supply and demand kind of thing.

Yea makes sense, also good so they don't just take over you're whole tank in a couple if months to.
