So i set up my QT tank over the weekend, and made a thread about the filter sponge. Well, i've left it in like i was told to do so, and also used water from the DT... Well, the firefish wont leave from under the sponge/pvc piping, but they are looking really good, eating really well! I would like to put them in the DT so they aren't so timid and scared, because i think the airstone is freaking them out... So, my questions/concerns are.... The water and sponge from the DT left a light brushing of some junk on the bottom, and in such a small tank i'm concerned about ammonia build-up... another question, i have had the firefish in the stores QT for about 2 weeks with some other firefish, and they started fighting, 2 died due to stress and the snails ate them, i got the last pair... it's been a total of nearly 2 1/2 weeks... would it be safe to put them in the dt? Thanks all!!

why not just test for ammonia to alleviate any concerns/guess work? Also, if that situation is true in their QT tank, it doesnt sound like much of a QT. I'd leave it in there for 2-3 weeks if it were me. Just my $.02....

Realistically, if you're not going to keep them in your QT tank for at least 4 weeks, there's not really a point to QT at all. Don't trust the store QT for anything. Just monitor your QT for ammonia and keep an eye on your new stock. If they're eating, that's a good sign, but the last thing you want to do is infect your DT with something like ich or kill any other fish with whatever your new fish might bring along.

Okay i'll be leaving them in there for a little longer... its just sad i don't see them move much and they just stay hiding in the one spot, all day and night... also, should i take the sponge out? I was told to leave it in there but i'm not so sure if that's so smart... and, could i use the gravel vac i use for my DT in the QT to suck up all the junk? Thanks!!

They QT almost all incoming stock for about 1-2 weeks, and if they show any signs of disease then it's longer. All tanks have filters with built in uv sterilizers and he separated all the firefish from this pair, by last pair i meant pair, not total firefish... I'm going to leave them in for a little longer then hopefully transfer in a week and a half, which would be 4 weeks in QT total, 3 weeks not counting the time with the other firefish. Thanks for the help!!

Did the sponge come from your cycled DT? If so, I'd leave it to hopefully process any ammonia and nitrite that shows up in your QT.
DO NOT use your gravel vac from your DT. Always use separate equipment for QT and DT. I have a cheap vac for my QT since I don't really use it for much except getting detritus off the bare bottom during water changes.

If they don't have independent filtration on every single QT tank, then there is no way of knowing what those fish carry. You might be OK, you might not.

Oh, forgot to mention, none of their tanks are connected, all independently filtered! That's why they be the best LFS hahaha
