View Full Version : Can Crosshatch Triggers Change From Male to Female
Hey guys quick question...
I bought a small pair of Crosshatch Triggers (3-3.5") from a collector about 2 or 3 months ago.
The male had yellow lined fins and a reddish tail, the female had slight red lined fins and a yellow tail.
After quarantine I moved them into the display and noticed recently that the male still has it's yellow lined fins, but the tail looks more yellow like the female.
Any ideas?

It happens all the time unfortunately. I have few that change From male to female and vice versa
I thought it's due to aggression/ tank dominant fish.

Is still having the yellow lining on the fins a good sign? Or is the yellow tail a bigger give away?
As the fish get larger, is there a chance it'll change back?
The tangs are more dominant in the tank... could that have to do with it? I'll try to get a picture later...
Here is a video of them today... sorry they wouldn't stay still...

The male is the one I try to focus on the most. You can see that he still has the yellow lining on his fins, with a yellowish tail.
The female now seems to have yellow lining on her fins now. Her fins were always more red before...
Do I just have two confused fish? Do you think the female might be turning male and the male might be turning female?

I really don't know if they will change back to male again but I hope so since I have 2 that change. I had a giant 9- 10" Achilles before in the tank and I notice the Xhatch are switching so I got rid of the achilles but I still have a bully emperor.
My other friend have 3 males, 2 switch from female to males on his tank maybe because it was the dominant fish on that tank.

Weird...
What do you think about the fins now turning yellow on the female?
They were extremely shy when they went in the tank. I think they are starting to become the dominant fish now.

Xhatch are always shy for few days most of them take a day to a week to eat.
anyway I am getting more male Xhatch a slightly larger around 5" maybe since I haven't seen a large male 7-9" switch to female hopefully 5" is a threshold

Stupid tangs always messing everything up... the Yellow Bellied Blue tail slapped them the first day or so.
Well hopefully as they get a little bigger one will change over... didn't really want to add any large fish to the tank right off the bat. Would like to see them grow. One day I could always get a large male, but knowing my luck he'll morph back to a female haha
Maybe the Lyretail Anthias that changed to male is the dominant male in the tank ;)

Speaking of anthias my orange stripe is a terror that's why I am scare of putting a borbonious in the tank. I have few anthias pair but anything I put in the tank he tries to kill them. He even bullies my Japanese masked angel

Great I have 5 Huchtii Anthias in QT right now... they are big... so hopefully he can't bully them.
Would also like to add a school of fatheads and blotched as well in the future...
Well looks like there are some differences in them now.
The larger one is darker in color and also has stronger yellow fins, still yellow tail though.
The smaller one looks more silver/gray and the fins are not nearly as yellow as the larger of the two. Also a yellow tail as well.
Hopefully a sign of them changing...

Oh man all over a mean emperor? I would of said bye bye to that guy if he was going after my bandit
Well good news...
The "male" is now MUCH darker than the "female". Still has a yellowish tail though and yellow fins.
"Female" is much more silver in color, with a yellow tail and brown/red fins.
Looks like it's a male and female at this point...
