Hi All,

Need some help on green stuff growing all over live rocks and 1 ID please.

1. Live rock turning green

I researched many threads and forums online but still could not determine what is the green stuff that is growing all over the live rocks. I was hoping it would be the carolline algae before it turns to purple, but wanted to make sure... as it is a little bit "hairy".

I find on some rocks, the green stuff can be blasted away easily with a turkey baster; while on some other rocks it is much more difficult to do so.
It is also starting to growing onto the encrust of GSP.

I did not add anything to the tank recently; don't have a phosphate test kit yet, will get one if necessary.

2. Bubbles on rock
I believe (or I hope) they are air bubbles. The HOB skimmer does spit a fair amount of micro bubbles into the tank. Initially I thought they were bubble algae, but they are very fragile and behave like a regular air bubble:
A. I touch or blast them with a turkey baster very very gently and they either disappear or detach and float to the water surface.
B. I blasted a piece of rock clean of bubbles during lunch time, and by 5PM I would see air bubbles reappear. Bubble algae don't grow this fast right?:uhoh2:

3. Green branches
I need an ID on this greeny-branch stuff... honestly I don't know where it came from or when it got introduced. It grows very slowly and don't move at all. I have not touched it, but it seems to be stiff as it doesn't move at all in the water.

Any help or advice is very very appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

The green stuff that comes off the rocks easily is probably Cyanobacteria. The green branches in the very last picture looks like Cladophoropsis. (see link below) As far as that short, slightly hairy green stuff goes, maybe green turf algae, or perhaps just your basic GHA.
Those bubbles your seeing is oxygen being produced through photosynthesis.

Thank you cloak!

I did some more reading on cyano, and it appears one treatment is to turn off the lights + sheild the entire tank for 3 days, followed by a water change.
I will do that asap. Corals should be fine in these 3 days right? I assume on the 4th day I should slowly acclimate the corals to light?

Cladophoropsis doesn't seem to be very harmful. I will try to manually remove it after the cyano is treated.
Will also see if the "hairy" green algae remains after cyano treatment.

Does this sound like a good plan?

Thanks again :)

Yeah, sounds like a good plan, but you might want to check these threads out first. (if you haven't already) GL.
