View Full Version : How much of a temp difference makes a difference?

About to start transferring livestock from my old 92 to my new 120. I have about 60 gallons of water in the 120 (30 gallons new saltwater and 30 gallons tank water from 92).

I'm having trouble getting the temps to match between the 2 tanks. 92 is running at about 77.5-78 degrees F and 120 is currently running at about 80 degrees degrees F. The 120 has a eheim jager 250 watt heater in it so I'm guessing that's why its running so high even though it's only set to about 74 degrees F. The 92 is running a slightly smaller Eheim heater.

I am planning to use as much water from the 92 as possible to avoid any shock. I should also note I'm using those crappy petco digital thermometers.

Am I overthinking this?

Probably not a big deal. Temp swings of a few degrees here and there are pretty common, even in real reefs. I would focus more on matching salinity and alk than a degree or two of temp.

I would not sweat that temp difference. Good luck
