Lighting question

Trying to avoid a further cyano outbreak, I've cut my lights down to 6 hours, currently running from 1 pm to 7 pm. Does it matter when I run them? Could I change it from 2 to 8 or 3 to 9? Does the tank light cycle need to follow the ambient light cycle at all?

when I worked nights I had them on when I was awake and off during the day when I was sleeping.
