There's many ways to maintain and reduce phosphates. GFO is one of them. You should have a plan on how you want to manage phosphates.

I had one from the get go but did not have to run it until my 110g was about 6 months old. I added too much new base rock at once to add some more aquascape without researching and got a spike of P04 and N03. That was the only time I have had to run my reactor but it was nice to have on hand when I needed to run it. Inexpensive tool that can be used besides running GFO material.
