I understand that it's always a good idea to dip coral before adding to display tank.

I understand that it is supposed to get rid of the "baddies" that we don't want in the DT.

Does it also get rid of the "goodies" (beneficial critter like copepods, small starfish, benign worms, etc?)?

Yes, this is why frags are dipped.

Edit: dipping is usually for acro's to get rid of red bug/AEFW.

So you would only dip frags? Or only Acros?

How about softies on pieces of live rock or larger colonies of LPS?

There are different dips. Thought you were questioning dipping for pests.

There are iodine dips for general health, dealing with infection....can be used for other corals. Not sure how this affects other inverts. But this is why dipping is for the coals only and to not treat the whole tank.

IME yes but there is usually not much of this on frags.

I dip all my frags before adding them to a tank, once every four months as a precaution against poor health issues, and as needed damage from accidents/aggression.

Yes dipping kills the good with the bad. But the benefits far out weights the cost of the good hitch hikers. And by the way Iodine dips and most commercial dips do little to nothing for redbugs for this you need to use Bayer Dip Method. Be very sure to rinse Bayer from frags at least two good times. Bayer will kill shrimp and crabs in extremely low doses if introduced to the Display

Due to the nature of this product, some caveats come with its use:
•Always wear gloves and eye protection. If any Bayer comes in contact with your skin, rinse immediately.
•Use 1-2 rinse buckets with water from your aquarium. Very small quantities of Bayer can be enough to kill ornamental shrimp and crustaceans in your aquarium. After dipping in Bayer, use the rinse buckets to rinse off any residual dips. Be sure to remove any acropora crabs before dipping.

Dipping concentration and duration:
•The effective concentration can vary quite a bit. We often use the same dipping container and add enough of the product to make it look like skim milk. If you are dipping a small batch of corals you can mix up anywhere from 2ml-10ml per 4 ounces of tank water.
•A dip duration of 5-15 minutes is recommended.
•Use a turkey baster to blast the coral and with flow to knock off any pests that will be stunned by the dip. Rinse in clean tank water and inspect for any pest algae, or eggs of pests.
•Do not combine Bayer with any other coral dip products.

Use of a quarantine system is still recommended after dipping, as the dip is not toxic to the eggs of many pests. They can be easily overlooked. A quarantine period of 2-4 weeks and repeated dips are the best way to ensure pests do not enter your aquarium.

We recommend you dip all corals, no matter where they come from, its a good habit to get into!
