I transfered everything to my new 75 gallon tank this morning. I had the maroon clown, mandarin, and the RBTA in a bucket acclimating to the new water of the new tank. I added all of the established live rock, all of the water, and some of the sand from the old tank. After adding all that stuff to the tank the water line was still to low to prime the canister filter. I went to my LFS before they even opened. Luckily they were there and were able to help me. I bought 15 gallons of salt. Got it home and quickly added it to the tank. Upon moving the rocks around I felt the water was colder now that the new water was added. Looking at the temperature I noticed it went down 7 degrees to 72°F. Im panicking at this point I have 1 hour and 30minutes till I need to leave for work. The fish are done acclimating and need to be transfered. So I had some on the spot decisions to make so I grabbed about 16 oz of water from the tank put it in a pot then brought it to a boil. I slowly added it to the tank pouring it into the jetstream to help distribution. I waited 20 minuts saw that it rose 2°F so I grabbed another 16 oz and repeated the process. And again once more until the temp was at 78°F. I didnt have enough time to do anything else to it other than monitor it over the last 20ish minutes. The temperature maintained the 78°F so I added the fish and rbta to the tank and left. Its been about 3 hours since then and my wife says the temp is at 79 which is what I had it set to. And the fish and rbta appear to be fine.
If this ever happens again for some strange reason is there a better way to raise the temp than boiling the tankwater? Is this method dangerous for the bacteria and whatnot?
