View Full Version : Does my overflow box sound too loud to you?

I just put an Aqueon ProFlex sump/refugium in last night with an eShopps 300 overflow box.

The box sounds...loud and awkward. The overflow itself doesn't fill up - just to the bottom of the U-pipe.

I've got a 660gph return pump running. Outside of a few drips, no problems. The flow through the Aqueon doesn't seem significant, but I imagine I'll work with it to figure it out.

But does this overflow box sound normal to you? The sound on the video is about 50% as loud as it is in real time.

Thanks in advance!

if you have ball valves you can slow the flow down some.

it sounds like your siphon flow is more than your return.

this will happen anywhere that water falls. thats why its called a water fall =P

Hmm - so maybe a stronger return pump? It's only a 55 gallon main tank. Was hoping 600 gph would do it. Pump came with system (got everything for $240 on craigslist), so I'm still in the black if I need a stronger return pump.

I have the same model overflow with a 320 gph return. Same gurgling noise. I stuck an extra air tube down it and it seemed to remedy it for now. I think the ball valve may be the best best to slow down the siphon and reduce the noise. I also wanted to try this set up:

Correction:

The siphon depends on the return pump. I meant slow down the flow from the main tank to the sump.

Thanks Kyle461 - I saw a video of someone making that setup, and I think I'll give it a try. That link helps, as it lists the parts I'll need - the video was fast, and I don't know **** when it comes to making things.

I also had a loud overflow and installed a ball valve. Then I replaced the ball valve with a gate valve which is a lot easier to make tiny adjustments. It was well worth the extra 10 dollars.

+1 on gate valve. When I had an overflow box, the gate made tuning the flow simple.

I wouldn't put a valve on the drain line, that's just giving the flood better odds.

I have the eshopps nano on my tank and got tired of the load toilet flushing noise so i put 2 strips of painters tape on the top and it cut the noise way down. Was going to make an acrylic "cap" for it but this worked well and I've been to lazy.

100% agree... Never throttle down an overflow without an emergency drain pipe in the mix.. It's asking for trouble and I would rather deal with trying to SAFELY quiet down the pipe vs a flood of your entire sump in your house.

Without an emergency drain line, I wouldn't throttle down your return either. Sounds like you have too much flow going through your drain and it's creating a siphon and pulling in air.

Have you tried lowering the internal box so that more water goes in? That quieted down my PF 800. I still get the sound of running water but nowhere near as loud as it was. Also some one on the site was running with some plastic scouring pads in the internal box. They acted like a baffle and a prefilter.

time to break out the drill =P

Ooo - some good ideas - a cheap plastic sponge in the overflow would buffer the splashing sound a bit. The main hose from my overflow to the sump is also too long - I think there's air in there. Going to have a friend look at putting in all PVC instead of the hose.

THanks all

Let me know how the PVC adventure goes. I'm interested in converting my eshopps overflow as well.

yes, and I use to have this exact setup and it SUCKED.....

I replaced it with a CPR CS100 Overflow (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewitem.aspx?idproduct=CR1511&child=CR1517) that was MUCH better but but would still make noise when maintenance was neglected or if the sponge was removed/had build up, etc...

I now have a drilled tank, and if this is a new setup for you I highly suggest you drain it and drill and install a built in Overflow (This guy agrees (http://youtu.be/AHUpLxnI3sg).) Look at BeanAnimal or Herbie (what I am currently Using....)

If you do not want to drill your tank and stay with a overflow box, I would consider buying the CPR and drilling it, adding a bulkhead or 2 and configure it as a BeanAnimal or Herbie. I just looked at mine and there is definitely room for a couple more bulkheads.

I had never really thought of that until right now but no reason it shouldn't work that I can think of. If you want a used one make me an offer via PM and I may sell you mine.

up your maintenance on the sponge, it WILL get clogged up and overflow.
