So I just read not to use plexi baffles in a glass tank. First I've heard that in over a year with a tank! So not 2 days ago, I build a sump with a refugium in a 30gal tank, using plexi baffles.
I saw the same video as someone else mentioned where the guy broke the tank. I assumed he was forcing the pieces, so I made sure mine fit easily. Also, I cut them using a scribe, not a saw, so there is some unevenness.
How big a risk is this?

Glass is not that expensive - I know you have to find a glass shop, order the glass, and go pick it up, but is it really that hard? $15 a piece usually. My sumps use 3 pieces of glass.

Not an issue of cost, fishgate. Pray tell, how did you reach that conclusion from my post? My sump is ALREADY built and in place. I asked for risk assessment, not cost analysis.

Sorry not really addressing it to just you, but perplexed why people build glass sumps with acrylic partitions. I've seen even 1 year old sumps built in this manor where all of the partitions leak. I've never seen an all glass sump leak at the partition panels.

I used acrylic as a matter of convenience. It was 2 isles away from screen frames, shims, eggcrate etc. I saw it before I saw glass.

Starbuck's? Hell man, I ain't that rich!
And in the food service industry we like to say: filet is a steak for those that don't like the taste of steak. Starbuck's is coffee for those who don't like coffee. Coffee flavored milkshakes, anyone?

No I just get coffee - straight coffee. Starbucks regular old coffee is not bad at all. I never get the super high calorie garbage. And it is cheaper then the cafeteria upstairs! At $2.50 for a Venti plus free refills all day long its affordable. :spin1:

I used acrylic baffles on a glass tank (ignorance) and nothing leaks after 2 years. thought about redoing it but it works so I left it alone.

The risk with using acrylic baffles is that they absorb water and then could exert increased pressure against a glass sump and the sump goes c r a c k.
Some people get lucky and nothing happens, but why take the risk? I got 4 pieces of glass cut and beveled for about $21. When you have a choice, go glass.

I wish I could get cheaper glass. One place wanted $35 per piece! If anyone knows an online place please post it! I could not find anyone online that was reasonable. Also I use 1/4" thick glass for the baffles they are just so much more solid then then 1/8". I don't mind paying extra for it.

Oh wow I had no idea. I just thought it was a higher risk of the baffle breaking. Great now I'm paranoid.
