Title says it all, my wife loves the fish but i read here and there that they can possibly nip at the mantles. Any negative experiences with them? I currently have a 4 inch maxima, i do love clams and down the road would like to add a one of each of the types, deresa, crocea, squalomusa (my spelling of them is horrible). 90g tank, list of inhabitants in case that helps is as follows.

yellow eye kole tang
3 blue/green chromis
whip fin fairy wrasse (90% positive)
purple firefish
purple dottyback
green mandy
feather duster
skunk cleaner shrimp
two emerald crabs
two small softie coral

as a side note i'm aware of the sizes that these clams can get to, the larger ones will be going into another system i will have in the works in about a year from now to house their potential sizes, and won't be purchased until i have the room.

I wouldn't try it. I had to remove a Coral Beauty because of nipping.

Just trying to feel it out a bit, i know how much fun it can be to catch a fish, which is why the purple dottyback is still in the tank, any expierences with them would be appreciated, good or bad. I was thinking about a Coral Beauty as well but my wife doesn't care for them as much so no point in risking that one.

I had a flame angel that started picking at my clams. Absolutely The hardest fish I ever had to catch. I wanted to throw a party when I finally caught him. My vote is for dont try it.

It's a crap shoot. Although these are one of my favorite fish, I've had about 6 over the years, not one didn't develop a taste for something in my tank, including one for my maxima clams mantle.

I think i'd feel the same way when i finally get the dottyback, he wasn't falling for the fish trap. Not a problem now but you can tell which side of the tank is his... So two votes no and one yes.

Had a beautiful Flame Angel in my 300. The Bristle Tail Filefish took to hanging out with it - best buds, so to speak. The Flame developed a taste for acropora...not a good thing in my estimation. I watched it strip down a few new frags in a matter of minutes. And then it took to the established acropora and LPS...mixing in the occasional clam nip. This is in a very well-fed aquarium, too. And all this happened within a week.
And did I mention his pal? Well, the Bristle Tail apparently thought the food was too much of a bother as well, and took to nibbling on acropora and thoroughly chowing on LPS. I ended up using a torn up trachyphyllia as bait to catch them both. It took time, but I finally got them out of there. About $500-$750 in corals and clams lost to those two by the time it was done.
Personally, I'd either pick one up and put it in it's own FOWLR 55 or some such, or just resign myself to feeding it coral and clams at some point and accepting the losses.

Hit or miss. The first flame angel I had nipped the large squamosal I had at the time. But I had a smaller tank then so I'm not sure if it was just a room/feeding issue. But the two other flame angels I had subsequently (along with an African Flameback) have never shown interest to a tang (knocking on wood) but I do feed them very well and they pick algae from rocks all day long.

Guess it's time to let her know to pick out a different fish, lol. Anything else reef/clam safe that has a bright red like the flame angels?

The flame angel is going to be a high risk for your maxima clam.

My clams now live in my frag tank because both my flame and potters we're going to town on them . Oh, all my frogspawn is there too .... for the same reason.

how will this velvet wrasse get along with a whip fin fairy wrasse in a 90g tank?

They're both Cirrhilabrus spp.; I think they'd be OK. Here is some reading that may be helpful:
