View Full Version : Sizing mazzei injectors and pump for large skimmer

I am having a new skimmer made and I can't find any info on which mazzei's to use.

The skimmer will be 5' tall and 10" in diameter. I should I use one big mazzei or two 1078's?

It is going to be setup as a external recirculating and I will probably feed with a large high pressure pump like a barracuda or something similar. I also will have a 2' extension made so I would like to be able to run the right pump and injector that's capable of handling the extra 2' of height.

I would love to use a pump with less wattage but DC pumps are not made to run mazzei injectors real well and I want something rock solid. I would be worried about them breaking as well. But if there are DC pumps out that would run this skimmer I would love to give it a try.

Is there another option that runs less watts that I can use?

A 1078 is a big injector and I think one would be plenty for that skimmer, with the right pump. You might try the Mazzei Injector Selector Tool (http://injectorselector.mazzei.net/) or try to figure out what RK2 (http://www.rk2.com/protein-fractionators-saltwater.php) does with that sized skimmer. But a hint is my smaller Mazzei's are 1.5" with 1 HP dedicated pool pumps.

Mazzei 1078 is 1" NPT. I ran one on Jeff's 48" & 60" skimmer and it work fine but these are only 6" dia. But 5' x 10" dia I would go with two for sure. What size couplings are you putting in the skimmer for the inlet?

I was going to put two 2" 1078's one for the intake and one for the bubble plate after the mazzei or mazzei's tie together. I was thinking two mazzei's would be OK but if I add the 2" extension later and make it 7+ feet tall I am not sure. Maybe even three 1078's would be better and just run the third with the extension. It is a good idea to check what r2k is using. I emailed them with questions about a few things and it seems they don't want to communicate if I am not purchasing something... I was wondering what fittings they use for the wash down feature.

I saw the calculator thing but was wondering why it needs all my info to get to it, is it a forum or something?

From some earlier threads I have heard owners of venturi MTC skimmers getting better results from multiple 3/4" injectors vs 1078 model

Is that what the really large skimmer in that thread uses? 6 3/4" mazzei's? So I guess three 1078's would be too much.

I can't find out what the 10" r2k skimmer is using...

I've got a 978 laying around if you can use it.
Freebie.

That's nice of you I appreciate it! I am not sure which I am going with yet though.

I think the Mazzei thing wants info so they can do sales calls. I never tried it though. And the RK2 guys are sort of the quite types if your not buying. But I do buy so I sent an email to my guy there this morning asking what size they use on that 10".

The thing about 1" venturis is, they squeeze down to about 3/8" inside and you need a pressure drop of 12-15 psi across the venturi. So you need a pump that makes your target flow at 27.7-34.7 feet of head. I have 1.5" and 2" Mazzei's running here. The 1.5" are using dedicated pumps up to 3HP. I have a 300GPM RK2 skimmer with one 2" venturi on a 1.5HP pump but that thing is 4' wide and 10' tall. The 10"x84" RK2 uses a 1/8HP pump but that would be a carefully chosen pump. High head from the perspective of a hobbyist.

Maybe my guy will email back soon. But he might be at the aquarium operator convention this week. Me makes a living selling people like me things. I decided not to go this year.

FWIW, my dual-mazzei MTC recirculating skimmer uses two 3/4" injectors and a Blueline 40 (PanWorld 100) pump. It was originally designed with a 2' reaction column, but I swapped in a 4 footer instead. works great.

So I could do 4, 978 mazzei's and only run two or three while its setup as a five foot and run all 4 when its setup as a 7'. I guess I should try the mazzei sizing page and fill it out. But if anyone has made a similar skimmer I would love to know what you used and how well it ran.

Piper27,I know Royal Exclusive is working on DC pumps.
They are also in Florida now so if you want a good DC pump check them out.

Any updates on the skimmer build?
