Ok, I just upgraded my tank recently to a 40 breeder. Only fish is a captive bred clown I've had about a year now. I had my LFS qt me another captive bred that I picked out about a month ago that was roughly the same size as my current one. Picked it up today and introduced it into the tank. I've read up on pairing clownfish and things like that. Me established clown immediately went to investigate and was nipping at the other. They kinda went back and forth for about 10 mins. THe new clown I guess got the idea and decided to hang out on the other side of the tank. Now I know all clownfish start out as 1 sex and then the dominant one goes female. I've also read that a solo clownfish will turn female within about a month if they are mature. The thing I can't really pin down is, what constitutes mature? I'm taking a guess that my established one is a female, but the other which is the same size I don't know the history of where its been so I have no clue if its still male or is female also. I've been watching the tank for the last few hours, and my established clown which almost never ventures more than 6 inches from its hosted trachyphilia (why it doesn't host the giant kenya tree I have I've got no clue, but anyways) , will ocassionally swim across the tank to the newcomer. It goes like its about to nip at the new one, and the new one turns sideways, and it doesn't nip. Is that a good sign? I'm taking a wild guess that if they were both female the new one would be fighting back?
