using my Red Sea test kit my phosphate appears to be under 0.04 but it's hard to confirm with just a color match. I'm thinking of getting a Hanna low phosphate checker but I'm not sure which one. The low model HI713 or the ultra low model HI736. The low tests between 0 and 2.5 ppm and the ultra low checks between 0 and 200 ppb.

your advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Most that are SPS keepers and wish to maintain a low or ultra-low nutrient system will choose the HI736 because of its low limit of quantitation; some of us, including me, choose the HI713 because of a perceived issue with inconsistent reagents for the HI736.

Having said that, many don't report problems with the reagents for the 736, and it's clear from the packaging that Hanna's changed the manufacturer of the reagent packs for their phosphate checkers. So perhaps inconsistent/bad reagent packs are a thing of the past.

Is there an easy conversion factor to get me from ppb to ppm?

Yes, X 3,066 and ÷ 1000

+1 for the HI736 ULR Phosphorus checker. I use the HI736 myself. I have compared the results to the HI713 and the 736 is much more accurate. Especially if you are measuring below .10

As laurentmonteau said, you take the results from the 736 and multiply it by 3.066. This converts phosphorus to phosphate in PPB. Then divide by 1000 to convert PPB to PPM.

I just printed a chart from Beananimal (here (http://www.beananimal.com/other/hanna-hi-736-checker-hc-opinion.aspx)).

Yes, X 3,066 and ÷ 1000

Or just multiply the amount in PPB by .00307
