looking into getting this pump just need some info on it. do I need an apex controller so it will automatically go to night mode?

No you don't need an Apex. You can set a night mode.
Go to Ecotec's web site, look under support, download the manual. It's not updated for the new QD's yet, but it's still the same other than long pulse mode is now gyre mode.
