Hi. I recent saw a video on you tube which stated that the test for alkalinity should turn a purple color rather than a pink color. Pink color means I received a bad batch. Well I just received a new test kit and it still does not turn purple color. Does this mean both my test kits are bad? Thanks 313810
I cross posted this from chemistry for greater visibility. If I have a bad kit then my corals may be in danger

Test it against another brand kit. I use Salifert, it turns purple, pink and red.

Dont forget to roll around the bag and not the bucket. Its packed to tight for bucket rolling to be effective.

Thanks I will soon if no one replies. I am hoping there is someone who uses red sea for alkalinity

I have had a couple Red Sea tests & the final color was always pink or orange for the alk test so I think u are fine

The reason why I question my kit.

Suppositly the correct color. This color also matches the video from red sea.

I have the red sea test and it turns orange just as the direction card shows. If it were to be purple, why isn't purple on the card? Now I'm curious to see this youtube video. How old is the video?

I didn't like the amount of color change in the red sea, it was almost impossible to tell right when it turned. It was nothing like the videos. I tossed it and I got a salifert kit. much better color change

My kit does the same as yours, old kit matched the card color but the new one is yellowish. I had some left of the old test so I checked the new against the old and they changed colors at the same time.

I bought a salifert test. Will report back when I receive it later this week

hey guys, so I used the Salifert kit and got a reading of 8.7 dkh versus a 8.4 dkh reading on the Red Sea.
Close enough? Looks like the kits are fine.

I could be wrong, but I think Spikey is just talking about using the RSCP Alkalinity test on his tank water, not testing a new batch of RSCP Salt.
Regarding the test kit, I have both the RSCP Alkalinity test kit as well as the Salifert Alkalinity test kit. I find they yield similar results, but the RSCP is more subjective because you have to reach a particular color. I find the Salifert easier to use. I also think you might be reading too much into thinking your batch is bad.
Regarding the RSCP Salt mix. I use that on my tank but I always mix a couple days before using. I've tested just prior to my water change and it tests out around 9 dkh. I think to get the high dkh you need to use a very new batch (like same day) or the Alk will drop. Personally I don't mind the Alk drop because I shoot for low 8's in my DT. I'm actually considering switching to the blue bucket for even lower Alkalinity.

Yep, close enough. I use Hanna, RSCP and Salifert for Alk. I originally had the Hanna then started questioning the results so I got all 3. They all differ slightly and I feel that's normal. You want to figure out which one works best for you and then use that kit for your future results. For me I think that will be Salifert.

Yep, my mistake.

I use the read sea and it turns a pinkish color which is the same color that is on the card it came with. I also have a sailfert and the results are very close 9.0 vs 9.1
