So I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is there is never enough, but I'm interested in peoples opinions.
Currently my system with the most flow is my 55g mixed reef. (also have a 300g stock tank). My 55g mixed reef has two 3200 gph grech power heads plus return. For the price point including magnetic mounts i could not pass these up. So, while i doubt these power heads are really pushing 3200GPH each, they are certainly moving the water. There is more flow in this system than any other home system i have personally seen, though i know there are thousands of systems with as much flow or more.
The water really moves in my 55g, but i have found that even my corals that are listed as low flow corals love this flow. I have the direction of the flow pointed against glass so the velocity of the flow is limited, but there is still massive amounts of low velocity flow in this system.
So from my observations, it seems that you really cant have too much flow. Where you begin to run into issues is when you have too much velocity within the flow.
Thoughts? Opinions?
