I'm setting up another reef tank using a bunch of my old equipment including some old dried base rock. I bought some muriatic acid tonight and am going to do the bath tomorrow night.
I have 2 questions.
1) I want to double check I have the whole process down.
the reaction part I'm not concerned with- I'm a bio major, I'm used to handling reactions involving strong acids. after about half an hour/45 minutes I pour some baking soda in there, neutralize it.
I was planning to remove the rocks (using gloves) and put them up on a screen table I have. dump and rinse out whatever container I used to do the acid bath.
my plan was to wash them down with a hose and then soak them overnight.
now to the next question:
In my last reefs I used an API tap water filter (http://www.apifishcare.com/product.php?id=549#.VSNHRWbandA). I have plans to get an RO/DI unit; I'm planning to order it tomorrow. I'd like to get this process going, though, and don't want to have to wait the a week for the RO/DI unit to get here.
is it necessary to use RO/DI water?/is it harmful for me to use tap water? I live in NYC, the water tends to be pretty good here if that matters at all.
