View Full Version : Bad silicone joint?

Looking for feedback on this joint seam.
AGA 75 gallon tank, rimmed with center brace.
The issue is that the seam is not solid with silicone. The gap tapers down and is no longer present at about 6 inches up from the bottom rim.
Thoughts??

That's actually a pretty large gap. Hopefully a more knowledgeable tank builder will chime in, but Id be calling AGA for a replacement if only for peace of mind.

That's my concern... It's nearly half, if not more than half missing at the very very bottom.
Took me three months to have the time and borrowed vehicle to go pick up this tank, and the store is less than a mile from my house :headwally:
Unless someone with the building experience tells me otherwise, I'm gonna start the process of getting a replacement... Or could this be repairable with say injecting silicone to fill the gap? I guess we start getting into risk/reward territory with that route.

No injecting of silicon, normally an entire seam is replaced as silicon only sticks to glass well enough to stay water tight. it does not like sticking to old silicon. If this tank is still dry (not filled) I would return it to store or call manufacturer and sometimes they will ship a new tank and tell you to just keep the defective one.

Yeah I know that silicone doesn't adhere well to silicone, but I meant more in regards to filling the void of missing silicone where the two glass panes butt up to one another. Surely this would add some contact strength to the seam?
I don't see the tank leaking, the inner seals all look nice. My worry would be having the glass pane on the end blow out because the seam doesn't have enough surface area contact in the bond.
Sending some pictures and info to AGA now..

Ive got a small bubble like the bottom of yours without issue, that long stretch looks a little risky though. There is a lot of pressure on that bottom seam.

Yeah this is really a disappointment lol
If it was just the one bubble I'd feel better, but I mean there is quite a bit of missing silicone in the seam.

Here is an clearer picture of what I'm dealing with...AGA said to return tank to store.
They also said "It could just be silicone over silicone and how it cured and nothing to worry about."
Right after the group of bubbles at the top portion of the picture is where the silicone becomes a full seam again.

It's never anything to worry about for them until the tank fails. Better have it on their stand.
...have them replace it and if they won't call your credit card company. I'd probably call your credit card company to begin with and let them know you are having trouble with the order given the amount of time elapsed.
What the hell is wrong with these companies shipping crap tanks these days. Did they fire QC?

Right? Poor Jeff left his name right on this tank along with the date he "inspected" it...
Frustrating part is I had the chance to inspect the tank before I brought it home and I somehow missed this one seam. The other 3 are pretty much near perfect.
At least I checked everything over again before I ended up taking a swim in my bedroom at 2 in the morning because we all know that's when it would happen if it did. :lolspin:

Got a new tank last night!
Seams on this one are much better, no gaps.
Exchanged at no cost and no argument after showing the seam at the store.
