So I just ordered my new 150 dd tank. I am very excited to get it.

I was just wondering, if anyone that has this tank, how you do the overflow?

I see that it only has one hole for in and one for out. I think it should have a backup overflow. So I am thinking of doing an over the top return and use both holes for drain.

I would love to hear your personal experiences with this tank.

Thanks,
E

I am running a herbie with mine.
Here's my build thread. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2435197

Yeah, I see it comes with one herbi, but do you worry about it getting blocked?

A herbie has a main drain and a emergency one so its safe. The plumbing they give you is for a durso style drain which is one drain and then a return line.

I dont have the 150 but I have a marineland 90 and am doing what you said you wanted to do. I used both holes as drain and emergency drain (herbie method) and brought my return up and over the back. Completely silent and works great.

It comes with a durso drain. Google herbie drain.

Great choice! I did the same with a herbie using both bulkheads as drains and had the return go over the rim of the tank. I'm setting up again and ripped out the corner overflow, siliconed in a coast to coast with the drain pipes going through the original holes. So pipes inside the tank. Hope it works when I fill it.

Thanks Herbi it will be!

Am I missing something.

The Herbie seems not to have a backup, such as in the case where the tall pipe gets blocked. That means while it is quieter, it only takes one blockage to end up with your tank overflowing.

Is this really correct?

If so, I am going to go Duriso and one overflow backup. That way I have two drains that can handle the full volume of my return pump, in case one get blocked.

Thanks,
E

ok now that I think about it. It would need to be FULL block to overflow, and I can not imaging how that would happen.

Ok, back to Herbie

It is fun conversing with myself. :)

Still a work in progress but here's what I did. Drain lines will need to be plumbed to the original holes. I don't see why it won't work.

And here is my build thread from before I moved.

With the herbie one pipe is a siphon regulated by a gate valve to match your pump gph. The second is a backup that has the slightest trickle going through it and can handle all the flow if the siphon drain was to clog.

Thanks! I sold my house so I sold all the rock, coral and fish to my lfs and now that I'm in the new house I'm setting up again. It just took longer than I thought it would.
