View Full Version : What's wrong with using a container like this as an acclimation box?
Hey everyone,
After losing our nice fat CBB that was in QT for 9 weeks after being intimidated by our Black and Yellow Tangs, I'm going to start using an acclimation box for new additions.
I really don't see larger acclimation boxes being offered and even the small ones are pretty pricey.
I'd be a little nervous putting an acclimation box with suction cups on the glass either way, since I think it would be blown off by the flow in the tank.
I saw this box while at the store with my wife this afternoon and just grabbed it for fun, being it was 4 dollars.
If I drilled holes and sanded them down and anchored it to the bottom of the tank, what would be wrong with using a container like this? Looks like it would hold a few fish and pieces of PVC.

Thanks for your input

Thanks :)
(Needs more fish, lots more coral, less hair algae, stand skin, etc...)
Yeah just curious if there is a reason, NOT to use a box like this for acclimation.

I don't see why not... should see some of the containers used at importers or even some LFS.

bottom of the tank? how to feed said fish being acclimated? clear material is better so the fish see each other. on the cheap you could use a massive PET bottle like 2 gallons-- very clear..

Good point!

Guess I could even cut windows in the box and superglue some fine netting there to help everyone get a good look at each other.
Also would help food travel through the box.
Food just goes everywhere when I put it in the tank. I'm sure it'll find it's way into the box.

I think what you propose would work.

Thanks Simon!
Eggcrate is a great idea as well. No fish I'm worried about is going to fit through eggcrate!
Mainly for introducing any expensive angels or any other tangs. The CBB would have benefited from it as well :mad2:
It's never good when the one fish that your wife really wanted dies. Also was a stunning specimen, ate from day one in QT :sad2:

Thanks! Was easy to make too. It's obviously no good for smaller fish that will just swim though the eggcrate, but for a larger fish or a group, it's perfect.
Ended up using that container as an acclimation box.
Cut out a large panel in the front and two smaller ones on the sides.
Created "windows" with eggcrate and BRS netting zip tied to holes I drilled around the panel.
Then zip tied a Mighty Magnet to the back side, so when I moved the container the magnet didn't float to the top.
Seems to work like a champ.
In all was about $4 for the container and the rest I had around the house. Not sure how that plastic would take UV, so I angled the Kessil above it in the opposite direction.
Have a large Copperband and small Crescent Tail Wrasse in there right now.
Will use it on the Bandit Angel this weekend.

Yeah I bought mine at HEB ;)
Can't see any real issue with using it. For the magnet holder zip ties, I used a bigger drill bit and cracked the plastic a bit. Didn't seem like a big deal. Might just use some Weld-on and add a small piece of plastic along the crack after this round of acclimation.

Looked it up and it's $100!!! That's a lot of money for a little acrylic box.

I use a thin piece of plexi-glass with holes and section off 1/3rd of my tank. It allows flow and small fish to go back and forth. Lets the fish stay in a natural home plus graze on LR
