Very cool, I have a 55 gallon no sump with a remora. I'm always thinking about adding the sump... Do you dose?

Miguelh1302
04/12/2015, 07:37 AM
Yes I have to dose 10ml alk every other day and 10ml calc once every 2 weeks

Every fish does their own work on the tank, nobody fights (just yet) I have little white sponges all over, a big orange one and am planning on adding more, skimmer is working just fine for now, and yes am way overstock, lol u can blame that one on my gf, she wants to add every fish she sees, and then I decide which one is compatible lol

He eats whatever I put in there, however I only feed live blackworms and frozen mysis shrimps

Tank looks good! However, in time several of your fish will outgrow your tank. If I were you I would consider being proactive and taking a few fish back to your lfs before you have problems.

No water changes? Keep in mind you do have a protein skimmer. Each day your protein skimmer takes out some nasty seawater. which means you should be adding new
Salt water regularly:)

thanks buddy, am actually planning on taking the angel back, he's kinda picking on corals, the yellow tang will definately be back, but he's not big enough just yet, so he's good in there for a bit, i do add some salt water once in a while and when i clean the skimmer as well, thanks again for your comment, really appreciated it

How do you not even use a filter, you must have carbon or some chemical filtration packets in the remora chambers right? Your water is so clear. Also how do you maintain low nitrates without water changes?

Miguelh1302
04/14/2015, 05:38 AM
Johnny i don't use carbon, I used a filter for the first 2-3 months, but it was actually a pain keeping the water clear with it, now without it the water is always clear. Sometimes I run the remora wet and replace the water with fresh salt water, that's it

Yeh loved that tank. Just set up a RSM 130D now.

Link to old build. Water changes arent essential in my opinion. You replace water as it evsporates.

Miguelh1302
04/15/2015, 09:00 AM
I think that's the key right there to water changes, u introducing new water as it evaporates

BigJohnny
04/20/2015, 11:33 PM
Yea but your saying you keep water clear and nitrates/phosphates down with only a skimmer and live rock/sand? AND no water changes? evaporation replacement isn't nearly as significant as a 10-25% water change obviously.

i get where u coming from, but am sure u know as well that every tank is different, or indeed i need to put my glasses on when looking at it :spin2:

04/21/2015, 07:38 PM
Looks good. Reminds me of my 29g I ran for 2 years with just a HOB skimmer and very unfrequent water changes. Just topping off as it evaporates and keeping levels in check. This next time around I'm going for a sump though. I credit my previous success to beginners luck.

Miguelh1302
04/21/2015, 08:23 PM
Roadkill I truly believe the more experience and the more into it that u get, the more **** u want lol, u get bored of the same thing over and over lol

BigJohnny

Don't you just replace your evaporated water with Rodi water? Like an auto top off?

BigJohnny
04/22/2015, 09:49 PM
Dope. I'm only going to be running a ro bh2000 on my new 75g mixed reef. Any tips to avoid water changes besides auto top off with rodi? Would I need to dose to replenish minerals not obtained from fresh salt water ?

Miguelh1302
04/23/2015, 07:38 AM
johnny my lighting is the current orbit led, it works for me really well, but you dont get the growth on sps that you would want, everything else seems to be doing great, as for water changes i just add some vitamins, coral frenzy, alk, and calc, thats it, if you want let me know so i can send u a pic of the products

AUFishGuy
04/23/2015, 12:59 PM
I am running a similar set up on a 55 gallon and it can absolutely be done but it is a pain. I lose almost a gallon a day, everyday i am having to add fresh water and if a day is missed it is no big deal but it is still a pain. I am upgrading and adding a sump.. actually building it tonight). there are just so many pros to having a sump. it is much easier to keep parameters in your tank constant. Even though small changes in salinity arent the biggest deal i think the goal is till to provide the best environment possible for our livestock. And while i understand how someone could go that long without a real water change i still feel that common sense says that doing at least some small changes, even if only every few months would be a plus for the system.

mcginnisandrew
04/23/2015, 01:19 PM
Any plans to add trace elements? One of the benefits of regular water changes is that most salt mixes contain trace elements that are necessary to coral health.

Miguelh1302
04/23/2015, 02:56 PM
Fish guy that makes totally sense, I think at least 2-3 times a year at least 20% change is a good idea. Andrew I do add one from Kent, (sorry, I forgot the name)

Martini5788
04/23/2015, 02:58 PM
Maybe it's just me but doing water changes every month or so just seems easier to me than dosing all the time

Miguelh1302
04/23/2015, 04:02 PM
Martini that would be awesome if I would have the time for it lol, but in a serious note, am just having to dose a tiny bit to be honest with u, and is really easy to throw some stuff off with water changes as well

Martini5788
04/23/2015, 04:50 PM
I understand putting off water changes, I have not figured out a graceful way to do it yet. Once I get done you would think that there was some kind of natural disaster that occurred inside of the house. I wear a bathing suit, gloves, and occasionally goggles haha. But I'm only 5'1, rather clumsy, and have a deep tank

Miguelh1302
04/24/2015, 08:04 AM
Martini that sounds awful lmao, perhaps a taller ladder?!?!?!

Martini5788
04/24/2015, 08:44 AM
I use various levels of chairs and stools. The problem is my short arms. And the canopy is attached to the tank, came that way, so the depth of the tank with the canopy is like 30 inches. My husband walks in and is like "we either got robbed or you did a water change". I have to vacuum the sand because my valentini kills all my clean up crew. So it is definitely an experience every time I do a water change. Luckily, we live in base housing( have no choice) and they have those cheap vinyl fake wood flooring so the water doesn't matter. When I do a water change my parrot also uses that time to take a bath in her water dish and gets water everywhere too. So by the time we are done the kitchen, dining area, and living
Room are soaked and trashed. Mantis shrimp is in the kitchen, parrot takes care of the dining area, and the display tank is in the living room. It's fun, not.

Miguelh1302
04/24/2015, 10:32 AM
Lmao that's sad, but hey it is rewarding looking at those clean tanks, I don't clean the sand either, I have queen conch, a bunch of snails and a twin spot goby, great for the sand but a pain in the butt (it killed my plate coral) oh well

Martini5788
04/24/2015, 10:48 AM
I just got in a bunch of snails yesterday and half of them are dead. Crazy puffer. I'm changing over my 29 from brackish to marine and he is going in there. The water changing routine is honestly just
Comical at this point. Hopefully it will get better when I set up the sump

Miguelh1302
04/24/2015, 10:59 AM
Yea sump always helps, but it is another hassle, I will keep my regimen into something fail and then I will figure out something else

BigJohnny
04/24/2015, 05:28 PM
If you run an ATO you limit salinity swings if you supplement with trace + alk + Calc you replace the nutrients from water change and then some. Seems covered to me. Miguel can u send me dem supplement pics. I was thinking of running ATO with kawklwasser (sp). Any experience with that? I would have a ph and no overfill failsafes running through my reef keeper.

Sucks when they start doing this stuff from nowhere, but oh well I think that's the beauty of this as well, we never know what to expect, we can imagine or have a very strong idea of what's gonna happen but never a 100% sure everything is gonna go as we expect it to, (what would be the fun on that)

04/25/2015, 04:14 PM
Miguel, thanks for the pics! How often do you dose those supps and do you use tests or probes to monitor ph. Also what tests do you use in general (brand/type)? I'm a newbie!

Awesome  Thanks, I'm looking forward to my last few fish additions. The corals I'll be adding will be a work in progress. I'm starting with small frags and that way I get to watch them grow. The small frag route has to be thought out properly as to what size will they become and how close I need to or not to the one it's next to. I added a fuzzy mushroom but I'm second guessing that choice as mushrooms can take over a tank over time. I'll think on this a bit more as I'm going to pick up two flowerpots Tomorrow a red one and a green one.

Miguelh1302
05/01/2015, 06:03 AM
That's what I did, tried to get everything as frag, so I can watch them grow, and even with my shitty lighting is been really fun to watch, they can take over the tank but believe me if u are on top of it u can fix it and keep it in shape

BigJohnny
05/02/2015, 06:42 PM
Hey Miguel, don't Kent coralvite and reef plus overlap to some extent?

Also, you have beautiful purple coraline algae growth! Did you start with all live rock (and was it all already covered in coraline) or did you seed dry rock?

Thanks bud, the longer I have my tank up the more I realize that when u have to many stuff in your tank to kinda keep everything in check because that's what everybody says u should do, the more open u are for making mistakes and become a slave of your tank, and if something brakes u are f**** because everything works together

johnny my lighting is the current orbit led, it works for me really well, but you dont get the growth on sps that you would want, everything else seems to be doing great, as for water changes i just add some vitamins, coral frenzy, alk, and calc, thats it, if you want let me know so i can send u a pic of the products

Hey Miguelh, I got the same light 46inch version on a 75 gallon. Im getting ready to start up.

Just curious what do you run your blues and whites at and for how long?

I am thinking Ill stick to soft corals as I have plenty of stony corals in my 180. I was think since they are only .25 watt leds, probably about max. maybe 100% blues 80% whites. Probably run blues 12 hours and white 8 or something of the sort.

Thanks,
-Z

Am running on timer 3 I think it is 100% blues and white, timer 3 is the longest one so I think it is 12 and 10 or something like that, I have the manual at home can not find it online, if u have the manual it explains how much it is on timer 3 for how long, if u can't find it let me know so I can send u a pic tonight

I just got a sunburst two weeks ago. Once it's acclimated to my tank I'll get some pictures. Has been eating well and has good color, just hasn't bubbled up in my tank yet. It only moved 3" or so from where I put it :D sadly my clowns are on the opposite side of the tank. I won't say what I paid for my sunburst but I got one heck of a deal on it as the guy who had them had 2 that just recently split

Nice loving it. there is something to be said about finding a reefing style that works for you. I do like keeping it simple as long as the results are there. I am getting back in with a 40B build I thought about going sumpless but I do travel a lot so decided on to go with one, for ATO res. hind the heater etc. but I think I am gonna go skimmer less...and do a up flow ATS.
for years I have been wanting to try one.

What brand 40b are you using. I just bought a tetra from petco $/g and it was absolute s*** construction and had to return it. The bottom bowed without water and glass was significantly misaligned. Looked at 2 replacements at the store with similar problems

Haha I mean two of my local lfs have their stores filled with them and have never had any issues. The one I got had significant bowing n when I finally found one that didn't, it had a crack. i only looked at about 5 (all at petco) but all had some bowing (left and right edges of the tank in the air) So rather than take the chance or keep searching I'm ordering an aqueon 50b from my lfs. Figured I'd go with a 50 instead of 40 since I'm ordering one neway.

BigJohnny
05/20/2015, 04:36 AM
Thanks for the feedback guys. Yes I like the last one as well, only way to get a bunch of caves (which I want for my fish) was to connect everything. I could put gsp on that lone rock in front corner haha, or back wall. What other corals take over like that?

Miguelh1302
05/20/2015, 07:18 AM
Leptastrea , Cyphastrea, Favia, Mushrooms, chalice, those are just a couple, but I truly believe that every single coral can become a problem if we don't check it almost every week

Awesome tank! Glad to see someone else running no sump no filter. I have a 36 bow that I have the aquac skimmer, no sump no filter as well.

It's a newer tank so it's just beginning to thrive but haven't had any issues at all. I did make the mistake of putting 2 blue green chromis in together though, just waiting for them to start world war 3 with each other. I might try to snatch one this weekend and put it in my other tank.

Do chromis need to be in 3s or something?

The Blue Green Chromis are great fish as they are pretty active in the tank. Thay are part of the damsel family so they have a bit of "psycho" in them but unlike other damsels they pretty much just beat up on other chromis.

Some people have no problems with more than one and in fact they love to shoal. The problem is if one is slightly smaller than any of the others, he will get picked on until he dies. You could potetnitally start with let's say 6 and end up with 1 in just a few weeks.

There have been numerous studies done and nobody can really identify why this happens in an aquarium. Some people have no problems at all while others have major issues.

It's all luck of the draw I guess.

Awesome bud thanks. I like the ship in a bottle [emoji6] nice touch. what kind of powerheads/wave makers are those (I assume that's what those white/blue control boxes with green n blue lights are? Also wats that black control box?

I also like how the aqua c has an in tank box covering skimmer intake/output, it makes it look like an overflow box. Yes it has a larger footprint then if it just had intake output but it's sleak

Thanks uncle I had to do that already once and it worked like a charm , Johnny those are wp10 jebao, and the black box is for the lighting, the black box it works really neat to clean the top surface and stop the bubbles, my pump is kinda tiny so it does not work perfectly to skim the top layer, but it does what I wanted for lol

Finally my permanent tank will arrive on wed/thursday and that's when I will set everything up and start my cycle! I went with a deep blue professional 50b. So excited!

Btw, have you ever had any leaking/flooding issues with your hob skimmer?

Martini5788
06/02/2015, 02:27 PM
I have the remora as well, and never once has it leaked. Mine doesn't work well because my tank is too big and too high of a bioload but it does alright. When I finally finish connecting my systems together I have a aquamaxx that I will use but I'm not going to get rid of the remora because I'm sure it would do great on a 40 gallon tank and it's good to have around just in case. It really is foolproof, plug and go

Yea man, it's so nice. I've never had a deep blue professional. I know they use to have some consistency issues with their quality control in the beginning of the company but in the last several years they have stepped up their game. This thing is immaculate. thickest low iron glass in industry for this size tank. Perfect black silicone, just a beautiful tank imo. Can't wait to get er crankin.

The 45g (36"L x 13"D x 24"H) is actually an unusual tank. It's basically a thinner (front to back) 65g (36"L x 18"D x 24"H) , which is a taller 40b (36"L x 18"D x 16"H).

So in reference to a 40b, a 45 is taller and narrower front to back

Haha been really busy traveling for work......never fun. I have all my equipment, set up everything except for my lights. Ran into a huge snag when I found out I have lathe n plaster ceilings and couldn't find joists to hang the lights from. Tried stud finders, magnets all kinds of stuff, finally found the right equipment but had to order online (arrives tom).

I couldve start my cycle a while ago without the lights but I didn't want to get any debris in the tank when I hang em AND I haven't been home for more than 3 days in a row in 2 months and don't want to run everything until I am home for at least a week straight to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Will hopefully have the lights up tomorrow and then unfortunately have to travel again but will start my cycle this weekend!

Have been taking a bunch of pics and will start my build thread soon:cool: I will definitely send you the link brotha.

Alright miguel. Finally just finished hanging my ati sunpower 6x39w from the ceiling. What a royal pain/nerve-wracking experience that was. I went the extra mile and used an oak 1x4 screwed into 3 joists and then screwed the hanging kit into the oak. If it falls I quit reefing forever haha..........or ATI sunpowers and just throw a radion led or two on a rack [emoji6]

Traveling tomorrow morning then be back on the weekend at which point I will fill up the tank with rock/sand/water and start my cycle (and my build thread)!

Super pumped but also nervous haha, so much can go wrong with leaks and stuff I think ill need to see a therapist once it's up and running [emoji27]. I'm in a rental townhouse with hardwood floors so if anything goes wrong I'll probably get the boot. Cross your fingers!

That's so awesome, was it an ORA (tank bred/raised) mandarin? I've heard they are breeding them to eat prepared foods now. Did you buy it online? Even though you have lots of copepods and amphipods I've heard that a single mandarin can eat the whole population of a 75g tank in about a month and then starve to death if they won't eat other foods, it's crazy.

I really want one but only if I can find one that eats everything like yours. How'd you seed copepods and amphipods?

Miguelh1302
06/19/2015, 05:28 AM
No I bought mine at the lfs around my house, I had no idea either did they, at the beginning he would not eat it, I kept throwing some right on him and he started going for after a while, the Copepods and amph, they sell like half a bottle of water with a bunch of them on the inside, u just pour it over your tank, make sure lights are off otherwise everybody eats all of them before they can hide

as long as you have areas where the mandarin can't reach they'll grow/multiply quickly enough to keep the mandarin fat. My dad kept one in a 55 gallon for years that was quite chubby,. it was his only fish and he didn't feed it (It just ate pods). I have a ton of pods in my 40 gallon tank from the live rock I got from tampa bay saltwater, huge variety.. I'm sure a mandarin would love it in there... I'd have to tighten up some spaces so there were areas he couldn't reach though.

Yes, they have to have a place to safely reproduce or the population gets decimated fairly quickly.

That's great. I heard it's hard to keep multiple firefish together. How's your angel doing? Still bullying?

Thanks man, can't wait to actually get some corals n fish in there. Already have a bunch of frags reserved at my lfs. How's your yellow gorgonian doing btw? I saw a white one with blue flowers on live aquaria divers den that looks so beautiful but it says "expert only". Do you do anything special with it?

Actually it's a blueberry sea fan but looks similar:
