To try to spread out the force of an unintended impact.

Personally I think it helps to anchor rocks in place and spread the weight out across the tank.

Wouldn't it make the sand in the egg crate rather nasty over time...?

I do not see any issues. I have some pieces under my rock. This tank has been set up about 5 years or so. BTW it does not seem to bother my pistol shrimp at all.

I placed mine to help rocks not shift. Especially when you have digging species of fish and crabs. Others might use it to help distribute the weight of the rocks.

Never used it before.
My rock always sits right on the glass.
Rock just isn't that heavy, even the dense TBS rock that I use.

I always just use a piece of acrylic sheet to avoid point-loading of rocks on the glass bottom. Probably not necessary, but offers me a bit of peace of mind.

I've never had any problems putting the rocks on the sand. Over time, it ALL levels out... I've never had anything that burrows either though.. Maybe that's the "kicker" so to say. GL.
