View Full Version : how hard have you found it to sell off livestock?

I've been planning to setup a temporary 40g reef in my bedroom while I'm taking time off from college; I've bought the RO/DI unit and an LED unit for it and so havent spend more than around $250 on equipment yet. everything else (skimmer, tank, stand, heater(s), rock, saly) I have left over from old tanks. I need to get a thermometer and some rock to seed the tank and I might need another bag of sand.
the tank isnt going to be extravagant- probably three or four small fish, a few soft corals, a handful of (photosynthetic) gorgonians, maybe some rock flower anemones, might add a BTA towards the end.
I go back to school at the beginning of February, at which time I'll have to sell things off.
what have other people's experiences been with selling livestock/systems? I don't expect someone to come take the whole thing, I'm willing to piece things out. just wanted some ideas...

Harder to do than one may think. Seems like when you want to sell something no one else wants to buy it.

I think part of the reason is that most people tend to stock their tanks with the same usual things as everyone else.

I think for the right price you can. I just wouldn't expect anything close to what you paid for it.

yeah I'm expecting to lose money on this. it'll be very carefully stocked in terms of fish/coral. It'll involve budgeting out a stocklist that includes the amount of money I'd be willing to lose when it comes time to re-sell.
the reef also means water changes will be a huge hassle. I've only now really considered the amount of time/money this will sap and whether or not it's worth it.

I would reconsider a short term setup.
I have at times sold stuff in a few days and other times I could not give it away.

Depends on your location. If your in a big city where there are a lot of hobbyist you will have much better luck selling for a better price than if you live 3 hours from a major city. It won't be hard to get rid of when the time comes....it just depends on how much you plan to get back out of it. People will be willing to drive for a good deal.

I'm in NYC so there's plenty of people around, so that'll definitely help.

I would also rethink a short term set up. Your tank is going to go through the uglies when it's new etc...by the time it's starting to mature a bit and look good, you are going to have to tear it down. Sounds like a lot of time and money down the drain. You are basically renting a tank

Buy a flat screen TV and put NatGeo ocean films on loop.

IME from 1 being hardest to 10 easiest
Clownfish 2

clean up critters 9
Xenia GSP 2
zoas palys 8
liverock 6
anemones 5-7
monti caps/common sps 4
chalice 9-10
nice sps 9-10
Really a lot depends on what everyone already has. Seems like a PITA for less than a year though. You would want to start selling off in December.
