Or, if I use a canister filter and not a sump - am I locked into only using a hang on the back skimmer?

Sounds like you are stuck with a HOB if you don't have a sump.

Yeah... as I feared...

And trying to a HOB that I can hide the intake/outtake in the pre-assembled corner overflow box of the aquarium so they are hidden - looks like it will be a problem also...

I also have a canister and I've been researching skimmers all day. It looks like you can buy an external skimmer that doesn't hang on the back of the tank. Does it have to go in a sump? I found an old thread in this forum with a picture of a Reeflo skimmer sitting on the floor behind a tank not in the sump. So is this possible? This would be a great option for someone with a canister. I've been looking at several brands but like the op I dont want one hanging on the back of my tank either. They are rather unsightly especially when the cup starts to fill.
