View Full Version : Bleached birdsnest

I wanted to see how my tank would hold up with a sps so I purchased a birdsnest coral
however now it is loosing it's loosing some of its vibrant pink color for a whiter pink coloration.
I moved it from the rock to the sandbed hoping that the coral just needed to adjust to my kessil a160
I just wanted to know if their is anything else I could do to help it color back up it is an sps so I didn't want to put it in a shaded area but before I do anything else I wanted other opinions

Thats all I'd do. Even SPS need to acclimate to your tank's lighting and other perameters. keep it on the sandbed for a week, then move it up if it's looking better. The color may be different than hen you bought it, as different lighitng in different tanks has an effect on coral color. It should get better soon though (a week I'd say)

doubt its your light. more than likely your water.

Asking for help and/or advice, but providing almost no information about your tank, isn't conducive to said help!

It might be the light. I had a similar problem myself when I changed lighting from T5's to a metal halide/T5 combo. Lighting was obviously more intense which caused the Birdnest coral which sits atop one of the highest points in my tank to start bleaching. It went from a dark pink/maroon to light pink/almost white. Had to move it down to the sand and let it recover. Once it did I moved it up again and it's been good and back to it's maroon/pink colours.

Also quick question. what shape are the tips of your Birdnest? Pointy or round?

Normal to some is not normal to others.
I have found a great deal of the time when people ask for advice but refuse to give actual numbers it usually does end up being that is where the issue lies.
LEDs often burn hot off the bulb, so that could be an issue.

You do realize that "normal" isn't a parameter?

LMAO, I've been accused of being "rude" lately and this is EXACTLY what I was going to say but didn't

Exact numbers
Calcium-430 KH-10
ph 8.2
nitrates below 5 ammonia-0
phosphates bellow 1
salinity 1.025

I have no experience with SPS. But Phosphates "below 1" sounds high to me. Typically, phosphates are kept at/below 0.03... not to say that's an issue (much less THE issue), as I know others successfully have higher phosphates. Just an observation.

But it's been more than 3 weeks since you originally posted. How's the birdsnest look today? Any better?

phosphates bellow 1

All my SPS bleached out pretty much overnight at .4 :mad2:
