I currently have a DC Diablo 5500 return pump and it seems that it gets calcium build up on the inner working parts and it tends to seize up on me every 1-2 months and prior to that it appears to starts to slow down. Maybe the dc motor isn't strong enough ?
I'm looking for a better return pump prob dc but it doesn't have to be but I would like the same return gph. Ant reccomedations ?

Red Dragon Speedy by Royal Exclusiv by far. It will cost a lot more, but in my opinion, is worth every penny. I have used 3 other DC controllable pumps and they are all okay, but these are in a league of their own.

1. They are dead silent. I mean you actually have to put your ear six inches away to even hear ANY noise coming from it.
2. Very well built with heavy/high quality materials.
3. They have a circulation loop through the stator/rotor chamber that continually flushes with fresh water, preventing buildup form ever accumulating.
4. The controller doesn't have any fans built in that may cause noise issues (I ran an RLSS return pump with a fan built into the controller and couldn't mount it because the noise would reverberate through the cabinet wall)

The skimmers (which I also purchased one of) are also silent and very very efficient. When you turn it on, the bubble start forming but you don't hear ANYTHING. I have no idea how they got the air fractionation to be so silent. Royal Exclusive is ridiculously expensive, but I will not own another brand of return pump or skimmer ever again. They are the best by a wide margin.

Another possible brand for pumps is Abyzz, but they don't have a big presence in the states yet. Those seem on par with the RE Speedy's.

Klaus, does the 50w return pump have a bypass?

I've never used the pumps mentioned..but I'm not sure how those pumps (or any pump) prevent a buildup of calcium etc from the moving parts? Your problem is easy to fix...just don't let it go 1-2 months at a time without cleaning/maintenance on it. Soak or run the pump in vinegar and it will keep it clean

I don't even remove it from the tank area, I just disconnect and drop it in a pitcher of vinegar/hot water and let it run for a while.

+1 for the Red Dragon RD3. I have one on my skimmer as well as one for my recirc pump and hands down these are the best controllable pumps on the market. I'd never run one of the Chinese DC pumps for anything critical. Actually, I would never run one period but the Red Dragons are in a class all their own and I love mine.

Ive heard that all these DC pumps are built by the same manufacture right now... im not sure there is much difference

Hi Tidus ...

now i heard the same rumor ... No, the RD3 Speedys are 100 % made in Germany-Pumps, include the electronic, the rotor, the stators, the cables, the rubbers, axis, bushings and so on...This Pumpline has nothing to do, with cheap chinese Pumps... Complet different manufacturing... Royal-Exclusiv was the first Manufacturer, where developed speedadjustable SineWave PMSM motors for saltwaterpumps... We use Sinewave technologie, the cheap chinapumps use squarewave. Thats a important Point for the noiselevel and yes ... for the pricelevel... ( typical german engineering) ..

@Johnic ... the RD3-50 watt use a internal bypass.... If you have calziumproblems, please use the 80 Watt RD3, he have a outside Anticalzium-bypass.

best regards .. Klaus

Calcium buildup on moving parts is aggravated by heat and low magnesium levels. Nothing you can do about the heat (cheap pump) but check your magnesium. Then go get a RD3 Speedy pump! I'm anxiously waiting for the 250 watt arriving soon. I also have a RD 1500 pump that powers my BK skimmer. It just gave out after 10 years of 24/7 service. It was a tireless silent workhorse. I ordered a new motor block and I will be good to go for another decade or longer. I'm sure you've heard that in this hobby you get what you pay for. This is a perfect example. Royal Exclusive is expensive, but if your a longtime hobbyist it's the smart way to go.

You are correct about the mag levels. They are a touch low and I'm in the middle of increasing them. I still want that rd pump. :inlove:

Raise it to the upper part of the normal range, near 1350 ppm and you should see an improvement.

Yup. I put the doser on and dosing 130ml each day spread out over 6 doses a day.

Been using two Jebao DC9000s for about 18 months.

One power supply died, but 40 bucks later I'm up and running.

Also have one unit on a DC light dimmer, gives me fine control.

Clean your return every month?! That's a once a year maintenance item. His pumps push water from the front of the pump back behind the magnet to push cool water over it. It keeps the water from heating up back there and creating calcium deposits. It's a simple hands off feature that dramatically increase maintenance schedules. Plus any time you can actively cool something the better.

I use a waveline dc pump and it has worked fine for the couple of years. In fact it's due for a cleaning here shortly.

To each their own I guess....isn't worth $800 to me when 30 min every couple of months I can just clean it up.

The Anti-Calzium bypass cooling the stator and save the bushings. The cleaning intervalls increase threefold...

OK Klaus, will do. The issue for me is not how often I have to clean a pump, but how reliable and energy efficient it is. The Chinese pumps have a high failure rate. I dont want to be away somewhere and have my main pump fail on me. Plus if your a lifelong reefer like myself, it pays in the long run to buy the product that is going to last.

Hi Paul,

we sold a lot of RD3-Pumps and the Failure rate is unter 0,5 % in the warrantytime...

We have a hard Qualitycontroll and all the Pumps was tested under highpressure.....

you can see the test here.....

Woohoo!!!! I can't wait! I already know the quality level as I already have an RD3 Speedy 50w on my skimmer and an RD3 80W on one of my closed loops. I can't wait to see how the RD3 230 compares to my Super Dart Gold although I am sure it will run rings around it and have the added benefit of Apex control since I already have the Royal Exclusiv 10v control interface.

Very good and that's my point. The RD3 Speedy pumps have a proven track record of dependability and performance. The quality is top notch.

The other BIG factor for me, which isn't getting that much attention, is how quiet they are. I could sleep with this thing running on my night stand! I'm curious to see if the 230 is as quiet as the 50 and 80. Might need one in the future with a bigger tank.
