I think when you start out in the hobby it would be the clownfish, my first thought as an intermediate reefer was the Yellow Tang; advanced reefers.....maybe the Emperor Angel?

Regal Angel. I think clowns were made popular by Nemo.

Yellow tangs since they are so common, even before the nemo craze

Well most logos incorporate an anemonefish over any other. Not my favorite choice, but hey, you didn't ask that.

Yea I'd have to go with clownfish, it just seems to be synonymous with saltwater tanks.

Clownfish is usually people's first introduced fish. At least in my opinion they are. We should do a poll lol..

Most who don't know fish will look at a clown and correctly id it as a saltwater fish. Not so with many others.

That's so true. I've put fish on gumtree in the past and had someone offer to swap my white cheek tang for 12 silver sharks, so I say 'what good are they to me, they're freshwater'.......'oh isn't a tang?' was the reply, you'd think people would do their homework before buying a fish!!

Has to be the clownfish.

I fought getting one so hard because they've become so cliche to have a clown in your tank. The 3 year old giving me puppydog eyes finally made be give in.

Haha same here. Didn't want one. Take the wife to the LFS, see the Wyoming White clown and she just looks at me. Yep, now I have a clownfish, lol at least it's an unusual one.

way back in the pre-reef days it seemed the lionfish was the must-have...now its a carribean invasive nightmare

Hey that is still a great movie! (recently watched it cause of the kids it is still fun )

But yes ....clownfish wins hands down.

As a followup what "coral" symbolizes the 'reef' hobby? (not just your favorite)

as a newb i think "brain coral" but that is based on no experience just my image of a reef

Great point. Bleached coral skeletons and lionfish were chic. My sister had two full sets of coral that she would rotate into the bleach to keep things whiter than white back in the '70s. I used to love throwing goldfish to the lions.

The OP should have specified the decade :spin3:
