View Full Version : Should I frag this toadstool?

Below is a picture of the toadstool I got about 3 weeks ago. It has polyp extension and looks pretty good apart from it leaning over like this. My question is can I frag the Toadstool by taking the entire top off to make the stem shorter? Will both parts, the stem and the top, continue to grow?

Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't. They lean over from time to time but they'll move around and find a comfy place.

Mine does it sometimes too:

Thanks for getting back to me, when you say move around will their base actually move around the rock or is it just leaning and stretching?

The leaning and stretching. To my non-professional knowledge, "leathers" are not mobile.

They won't get up and walk around like an anemone, but my leather has been slllooooowwwwwllllllyyyyy creeping from its frag plug to the base rock

thanks Pastey, I appreciate the advice. I'll leave him be where he is and see how he gets on!

that's interesting, my base plug is on the sandbed so I don't know if he would do the same...

My leather when purchased was attached to some rubble rock. It over time released from the rubble rock and attached to the main rock work on its own.

They do lean and change their "stance" over time to find the best position for flow/light.

Your leather looks pretty small currently. I would let it be. Save the fragging until it outgrows the area you have planned for it.

If you do decide to frag-

Yes. Both will grow.

When i fragged my large leather(it was already splitting) i used a wood toothpick with some superglue and stuck it through the leather and into a hole in the rock work to hold it in place.

Eventually the leather attached and the toothpick decayed.

I would recommend a flashbang then a frag[emoji48] . In all seriousness, no I wouldn't frag it until it straightens up its posture and stays there for a bit.

Toadstools need light and flow, get it out if the sand and up on the rocks where it can get more of both. It will do better when you do.

My leather I got when I was buying a xenia as one of my first frags ever and it leaned over and grabbed the Xenia frag so I got it as a freebie, leathers are prone to grabbing nearby things cause they like to get a really firm anchor

Try re-positioning the rock so that it is standing upright.

My very large toadstool is in the right front corner of my tank in the sand, with very high flow and doing quite well.

Thanks everybody for the replies. I repositioned him slightly to get more flow and he is now upright. Thanks for the help :spin1:

Do bubble corals require good flow? I'm set up for him if he do.
