I present my new project, the "Reef Bommie"

Many of you already know me by my last aquarium, Iwagumi Reef, where the minimalist style was the hallmark of the aquarium.
Well, in this new project I want everything to turn around naturalness. The idea came a year ago when I discover walking alone the spanishs beaches these rocks uncovered at low tide:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4552/38651473412_fb9dd1b531_b.jpg

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4539/26907693729_aff31490d2_b.jpg

Immediately I was fascinated by the simplicity and harmony that nature is able to create in their forms.
From here, I started looking for something similar to these simple rocks on the reef, and I concluded that my next tank will recreate a Bommie:
Structures of isolated and independent coral that can be as small as a beach ball or as large as a car.
They are structural oasis surrounded by sandy, which provide shelter and housing to many marine organisms on the reef.
These reef structures are named "bommies", Aboriginal word meaning outcrop reef or ride.

Any examples of bommies in nature:

Unless some change such as skimmer or the location of the vortech (which I will explain below), I will keep the same team:
- Tank: 36 x 36 x 20 inches optical glass (100 gallons cube)
- Stand: ELOS Square 36 x 36 x 32 inches
- Pump return: Tunze silent 600 gal/h
- Circulation: 2 Vortech MP40w
- Lighting: Sfiligoi 12 T5 x 39w
New equipment:
- Skimmer: Reef Octopus SSS150
- Carbon reactor: Bubble Magus MF70-H

Will you use the Igwami's tank or this is going to be a whole new set up?

For scaping were used 41 lb of live rock "Pukani", which have previously been cured during 1 month in a container with little light and a couple of small pumps to circulation:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/37663186635_741b6e32cc_b.jpg

I've also used 13 lb of rock (mostly Deepwater) I had in the sump of Iwagumi ... in total, I used about 55 lb of rock to create the Bommie.

And after a whole morning shaping the structure, this is the result today (put it in HD):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3OS_fTi8fI&list=PLEMumlW0um9WRqot0mRfEqlQuI-tDcWh5

The water flow is critical in this new project, because not only want to make a natural scaping but also get some forms of growth the most natural possible in the corals... for this reason, I located the two pumps faced to get a great water turbulence on top of bommie, where I will place the most demanding species, as acroporas humilis, Pocilloporids, etc.

I simply chose the music from the music apple sample. I thought I would start the new reef with relaxing music.

Scape is looking good yano. I'm looking forward to watching this project take shape. Will you be adding any corals from your previous tank, or start with all new?

I will keep 12-14 frags of my last aquarium.

Vortech run in lagoon mode to 50%. Maybe try reef crest mode to 60-70%, but I think I prefer lagoon mode because it moves more water.

nice bommie beginning!
i don't remember your old bulb combo, but i do know that you preferred a look closer to natural daylight. This combo seems to be more on the blue side. Is this intentional or am I just mistaken about what your bulb combo will look like?
When will corals go in?

The only difference between my previous settings bulbs and that is that I changed 2 KZ Fidji purple for 2 ATI actinic. Current combination will be slightly more bluish and also think a bit more natural (the 2 purple fidji produced an unnatural red/purple tone, especially in photos)

Thanks my friend!
At the top of the rock structure will place only corals like to receive very high flow as acroporas humilis, poccilloporas and styloporas. The height of the rock is designed to meet this demand by being located in front of the vortech...but will not be a problem, because this type of corals do not grow up but sideways with short and thick branches.

My passion are the SPS corals, and the aquarium will be nearly 100% SPS ... but maybe there will be some small LPS as Euphyllia, goniopora or rock anemone to host symbiotic crustaceans as porcelain crabs, sexy shrimps or periclimenes shrimp.
Vortech are facing each other, but with minimal deviation between them (about two inches)

The skimmer: I want to take charge of the biological filtration in to the live rock in this aquarium, so I have chosen a more modest skimmer and suitable to my volume, Reef Octopus SSS150...do not want overskimmed.

It's a media reactor (GAC, GFO, etc) not biopelets reactor. I use with active carbon...eheim pump adjustable flow is 37-75 gal/h.

No, any problem with them, they are peaceful species not usually show aggression toward other surgeons.
Naso has more time (6-7 months I think), and the other two were introduced in my previous aquarium 2-3 months ago.

Multifasciatum is very easy to keep, at the beginning it can be quite shy and barely be seen more when you feed, but once is adapted be seen enough and eats everything...lovely fish!

Here you can see a video I recorded it in January:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVVSSQVEIfo&list=PLEMumlW0um9V9zd6jOeq7Gx_W2AIPvi8a&index=6

Previously I always had enough montipora frags whose growth was very fast in the Iwagumi reef and should be pruned frequently .... in my new aquarium donīt have any seriatoporas or montiporas corals because I donīt want more rapid coral growth, so actually I have only a few frags in this frag system. Now I'll use it more to help the adaptation of some new fish at the Reef Bommie.

Iīm very satisfied with the skimmer, only consider improved the sound of the air intake systems ... I'll put a vertex or bubble king resonator to silence it.
You should not worry about the sound of the pistol shrimp, only very occasionally will hear his sound, which is not so strong.

Following the introduction of the frags that I kept from my former aquarium, these are the first pieces of coral acquired for Bommie:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4567/26839866809_f640cc8a1a_b.jpg

Three Aussie acropora frags: pink tips, green tips and selago yellow tips.

Referring to the tank, green algae have appeared in the sand and some patches of diatom on the rock so I can not light too until the system is sufficiently mature and the algaes disappear.

Hi Yano...
been following your tanks since the beginning here and in the Spanish forum. Your old tank was an inspiration for me and that's why I made my new tank with the same dimensions and similar kind of landscape. Now I see that you changed to a new landscape and it gives me mixed feelings because your old landscape was amazing!!

Thanks Marco is always a pleasure to know that my tanks can serve as inspiration for other aquarists in different parts of the world.
My taste for clean aquariums, with a minimalist style as well as by the SPS corals and small fish has not changed and probably will always be some of the hallmarks of my aquariums but all aquarist is evolving, and the challenge of trying new things add new concerns....my purpose in this proyect is to move towards greater naturalness.

That sump is awesome, I also love the shrimp/goby pair. Have you thought about some wrasses, they add some great color and movement to the tank.

Thanks, they are more 4 years with me.
I have no Wrasses, have never caught my attention because they are too big for my taste (I like that in my aquarium only fishes with greater prominence, as surgeons, angels or butterflies exceed 2 inches in length) ... I have considered the option to include some small wetmorella, but for now is only an option.

I am delighted with the three surgeons, they are very peaceful, but naso is my weakness also.

you have a really good outcome of the quality with the pictures, How do you set your White-Balance? I do have a hard time setting it up because it always turns out more blue then white.

First I adjusted the white balance manually on the camera (you must do this default with a white object illuminated under the lights of the aquarium setting, you can be a paper or even sand aquarium) ... with this you managed your photos do not resulting as blue, then once made the photo, finished adjusting the balance (if necessary) with a photo editing software (Aperture) to give it a more realistic tone as possible.

What type of glues/putty are you using to attach your frags?

Almost everyone is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (Reef Glue Seachem), tortuosa and valida with epoxi, and any pieces (microclados, samoensis and Stylos) are only supported until they themselves are set to rock.

Glad you like the evolution of the aquarium. My phosphates are always lower than 0,02ppm therefore not need to use anything to reduce them .... I think a rigorous maintenance of my osmosis system, and avoid overloading of fish and food in the system are the cause of it .

No, I do not do vacuum or any other maintenance to the sand ... it's just a matter of having very low nutrients, but without losing the right biological balance of the aquarium.

There are 4 free sites to be occupied for SPS corals (I want to get a acropora spathulata...others are not defined).
As for fish, basically lack a school of small fish that help to highlight the natural appearance of the Bommie.

Love the ruby dragonets, thinking about getting some, they have them at my LFS. So are you feeding them pods at all? What are they eating for you.

For now only they eat what they themselves hunted by the rock .I have recently started to edit some phytoplankton to increase microfauna aquarium.

Yano, your tank is due for a 6 month update soon I think. I look forward to a new video.

Meanwhile I have some questions:

In this photo we can see some bottles of elements. We can see Iron, Iodine, and I think B-Balance from KZ.

1. What is your dosage of KZ B-Balance? Why do you dose it/what effect does it have?

2. What else do you dose?

3. What brand of GAC (Carbon) do you run in the carbon reactor?

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm187/yanoreef/Reef%20Bommie/IMG_2403_zps4m0jaqd7.jpg

Lastly, how do you judge fish stock/fish feeding to nutrient balance in favour of SPS colours? - I ask because you achieve SPS colours that rivals Zeovit and other ULNS systems, but you only utilise GAC as the only filtration besides a modest skimmer. I really admire your methodology.

Hi Sahin

For personal reasons I had the aquarium very neglected in recent months, in fact even I've been thinking unmount ... in the coming months I will decide if I can cope maintenance dedicating the necessary time or dismount.
However, I will answer your questions (and I appreciate your interest):

-1 and 2. In this aquarium I've only regularly dosed iodine (20-25 drops three times a week) ... the rest of products that you see in the picture I have of my previous the aquarium but I've used just have not found it necessary (iron I dosed only in sufficiently mature and very low nutrient levels aquariums, and B-Balance in case you want to slightly lighten the color in the same case).
-3. I use Carbonit-P of Brightwell.
-About your last question, the colors of corals depend on the level of nutrients dissolved in water, zeovit and other probiotics methods are just methods that reduce nutrient loads in aquariums with high fish ... aquariums with low fish load, you can get the same nutrient level (and therefore the same colors) simplest form as in my case.

Aww man, sorry to hear you have too much going on to deal with the tank. I am sure everyone else would say the same as me, just ride it out! :) I was hoping to see this tank grow out some. I love your choice of acropora especially the monticulosa and other thick reef crest type acros. Good luck! I lost everything I had last year due to personal reasons and couldn't find time to deal with the tank. I restocked it so I am glad I kept it running in the end.

There are hardly any fish (now I have only 4 couples of gobies) because most of them died during the past summer vacation.
I also lost 5-6 acroporas before the summer for having abandoned the aquarium too, but as you see in the pictures are again sprouting from small patches that survived. :D

Thanks. No water change or cleaning, Iīve a good clean up crew (enough nerites snails, clibanarius tricolor and pagurites cadenati hermit crabs and any turbo, snail, nassarius snails and 2 strombus, 2 holoturia atra) but the main cause of tank cleaning are its low nutrientes but maintaining the biological balance.

Colorful corals, clean and beautiful sand. Amazing that clean rock!

Nice growth n color! Do you trust that Regal with your sps!?!

Regal angel cause less polyp extension in SPS corals, but no issues damages.

No carbon dosing required, my fish stock is very low (regal angel fish and 4 pair of gobies)...only live rock and low skimming.

And why the coralline is not covering the rocks. Is it top secret? :-)

I,ve never had a big growth of coraline algae in this tank...I think that itīs caused by strong lighting (12 T5 tubes lamp) and low nutrients.
It is curious as in the glasses (where the light does not come so directly) if there is a strong growth of coralline algae, although light pink. Every 2 months I step a blade to clean the rear glass for this reason.

It looks so natural with all the encrusting corals.

No, my gobies arenīt sand sifters....they are:
- Pair of Acanthemblemaria Hancocki
- Pair of Priolepis Nocturna
- Pair of Priolepis Cinta
- 2 (No pair) Stonogobiops nematodes (one in symbiosis with alpheus randalli)

When I say this, I mean that today it is easy to reduce nutrients and get very low levels of nitrate and phosphate with the skimmer available, probiotic methods, etc ... but often this leads us to overburden some nutrient producing imbalances Biological results that result in a dirtier aquarium, cyanobacteria, biofilm breakdown, dirty rocks, etc.
To get a clean and healthy aquarium, you have to keep the nutrients at very low levels but without altering the correct biological balance of the aquarium.

New follower here. I actually found your Iwagumi tank thread and found it so amazing, I had to tag along. I am a zeovit user and have been constantly getting dinoflagellate infections to the point where I'm getting pretty burned out of the hobby in general. Your tank is an inspiration. Your corals are also very similar to my style. Compact digitate acros, bright stylos, pocci, and birdsnest. Very cool. I noticed that in your Iwagumi tank you left zeovit. I want to ask how you did that? Slowly took your reactor offline? I don't know if I'll stop zeo with my current tank, but I may build another tank and just use live rock, carbon, and patience. I've found that simple is sometimes best. Thank you for posting. It is truly an inspiration.

I have a few questions if you don't mind. They always say to ask a master reefer for a better idea of the hobby. I noticed that you don't have a filter sock. If you don't use one, do you keep a clean up crew in the sump? I also noticed that you mentioned you don't do water changes. If you do, how much/often and what brand of salt do you use? I may have read into it too much, but I just want to make sure. One last question, do you use the caribsea oolite that is live sand or was it dry. You made this look so simple, it blows my mind.

Yes, I retired zeovit slowly.
The first thing you must do is not to change your zelitas anymore, and reduce the flow in the reactor to the minimum possible. Then slowly withdraw the amount of zeolites, removing a small handful every 7-15 days as you look at the aquarium ... the idea is to empty the reactor in 2-3 months

Filter sock helps keep the sump free of detritus, but should be cleaned almost daily if you do not want detritus accumulated in them to increase the level of dissolved nutrients in the water ... it's a question of choosing which you prefer to clean, if the Filter sock or sump?
So far in my aquariums I have always preferred to clean the sump, but for it is important to have a design of the same that facilitates this work. In my case, the design of the sump and a circulation pump at the bottom of the same make the detritus accumulate only in its aisle and front so it is easy to siphon them a couple of times a week.
This way, I change little more than 1 gallon of water every time I siphon it ... apart from these small changes I make one or two partial changes of water (5-6 gallons) every month. I use the neomarine salt of brightwell aquatics ... this is my favorite brand and the one I use in all my additives except for the feeding of corals, which I use AAHC and Coral Vitalizer of korallenzucht.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4523/24787582248_9647ab5d7c_b.jpg

About sand, itīs live sand (Bahamas Oolite) but I always treat it first with osmosis water (leaving it several days in soaking and doing some rinsing) to eliminate or reduce as much as possible its bacteria because I cure my rock apart so my aquariums start with already cured rock and few nutrients and the Living sand could be harmful in that case.

Thank you for your reply. I posted a thread on the international zeovit forum asking how to stop as well. G. Alexander gave me his method, but I'm sure he has never done it himself. It looks like you have some methodology from both zeovit and triton in a way. Very cool. I like that less is more. Have you encounter dinoflagellates or cyano in either of your builds?

Thanks for the update! An inspiration! Looks very natural, not like a 'fruitstand' we often see. Natural placement of corals, I love the encrusting species.

Amazing! I just read your whole thread and I’m so happy to see you kept it and let it grow!

Did you move the other corals from the rock with the Porites on it?

Thank you very much, I like that my aquariums transmit naturalness.

Thanks, acropora turaki blue had a problem with RTN and finally lost the battle for space with the porites, and the same happened with the acropora echinata green.

Hello Yano,

I love your reef......It's very, very inspiring.
The layout, the fishes, the inverts....

The pair of goby antenna is a plus....
Mine, unhapilly, disapeared....I'm thinking about get another one now that my reef is more mature and stable.

What kind of urchin is that?
How long you've been keeping it?

Congrats,
Alex

I really like your aquascape. Without seeing yours, i had done something simlar. In my case, I have a 6’ tank in a peninsula style. I have a rock structure to conceal the overflow box that extends about 1 meter from the back wall, then a small but substncial sand bed and then a smaller rock structure isolated toward the front end of the tank.

I have been cited by the “pounds of live rock per gallon of water police” for not having the 1.5 pounds per gallon required LOL, have you been told you don’t have enough rock? My thinking is: If I fill the tank with rock, then where will the coral grow?

The aquarium has been disassembled.
I have really enjoyed marine aquariums in the past 15 years, but lately I was a bit lacking in motivation to keep it so I think it's time to look for new challenges .... given my passion for the creation of aquatic landscapes and my love for small fish I decided to experiment in the world of freshwater aquatic landscaping.
Who knows if it will be one forever or only one until then ...
I do not want to say goodbye without sharing with you the last photos of the "Reef Bommie" before being dismantled:

Thanks Alex!
My urchin was 1 echinometra mathaeii (one year with me) and 1 Lytechinus variegatus (5-6 months with me)

Thanks...I used aprox 40-50 pounds of live rock in this 100 gal tank.

I came from freshwater to salt a few decades ago but I was totally fascinated by the lake tanganyika biotope and the aquatic artists like takashi amano and the whole dutch aquarium aesthetic. It can be as endlessly fascinating as reef keeping.
Enjoy your future aquatic endeavors. It was a pleasure to watch your reefs develop.
