I am what you call a poor reefer and definitely look for ways to not spend thousands of dollars on aquarium equipment, I am in the process of setting up a 150 gallon and only a few big things left to buy for it. I have a good friend who uses "ebay lights" on a 120 and grows SPS LPS wonderfully.

What's your advice on: http://m.ebay.com/itm/251495773757

Have yet to decide on what to grow in my tank but am considering buying 3 of these and building a custom hanger for them.

i do not recommend getting eBay lights. there are however cheap china led lights on amazon that have good and bad reviews. buy from amazon because people have reviewed the lights there. i have a one they are awesome. really cheap and strong. sps lps and anemone are all thriving

Not sure if "does good on coral" qualifies as a good review. With lighting, you get what you pay for. Try to stick with what works and search on here to see what others have done.

I'm buying two for my new tank. I bought fluval lights, most people on here told me they were absolute trash, and would never work. I have had a tank up for 6 months and have had lots of growth, even on acropora. Which everyone here and other sites said I wouldn't.

I appreciate the fact that people put reviews, but in this hobby (it seems) that everything is **** unless it's the most expensive.

My friend with 20 years experience runs those Mars Aqua lights. And he's constantly fragging stuff for me.

They'll grow coral. You'll have to mess with settings. Start low and go up slowly.

Personally I like led/t5's or all t5.

I have run reef breeders leds for 2 years and only ever had mediocre sps growth. I have since added T5's along with the leds and growth has exploded.

Trevor I just hung 6 of these lights over my 200. I have "plenty" of light. I think they are a good buy for not so wealthy reefers like us.

My husband put 3 over our 125 softies tank and love love love them. Only added frags about a month ago have double the size of our mushrooms. And I work at the LFS they use the same ones and grow good SPS. I know that one day I will need to upgrade or replace but at that price I am not to freaked out if something happens to them. It was a big deal for us to be able to even buy lights so yeah you get what you pay for but your tank will be better than it was yesterday. You will be able to enjoy it now and if you want to upgrade down the road it will mean that much more.

Lol, you do realize those are pretty much the same lights as the OP's in question only much more expensive and with a different name slapped on the box.

Theres a facebook group as well that does the Chinese lights.

Search for Chinese Blackbox LED Proof Group.

They have a few different options.

I don't recommend getting eBay lights, not a great spectrum on eBay lights, too much warm white and red. There some good fixtures from Reef Breeders and Ocean Revive,FB GROUP BUY as well that does good fixtures, great spectrum and cool features.directly ship from Chinese manufacturer, save a lot of money,I run 2 of the GROUP BUY 165w timer lights for my 48'' long tank,It works great,white/blue/moon light channel, remote control and built in LCD screen with 3 channel timer,I am happy with that.

This is where knowing/learning how to solder comes in. I swapped out a bunch of diodes on the eBay boxes to my own personal color preferences.

They should work OK for you since you are just getting started and on a budget.

But if the budget is that tight, maybe that tank is too big for you. Big tanks come with big expenses. This isn't a cheap hobby.

Grew SPS like weeds with our old blue/white Cheap Chinese Lights.

On our new frag tank we have a 60" 3 watt LED full spectrum light and it seems to be working. Only using it at 30%, no browning on SPS yet. Maybe a little bleaching on some newer frags.

Did Kessils on out big tank... just like the look and also the controllability.

A member on here I just meet has the China one on his tank with lps and sps. Saw his tank last week, everything is very healthy. He said he had the China ones for over a year, one of the cooling fans just failed.
